Curtain call coming for Orphan Annie's

LONG HILL — A part of the local live music scene is about to find itself orphaned.

Orphan Annie's, a haven for blues, jazz, rock and R&B for the last 30 years in the Stirling section of the township, is closing Monday, co-owner Rick Romano announced.

"It's time," said Romano, who operated the club and restaurant at 1255 Valley Road with his parents Frank and Ann Romano. "My parents are elderly and they wanted to get out. It's a united decision."

Orphan Annie regulars were told of the closing last week.

"The closing feels surreal," said Warren bluesman Bob Lanza, who performs at the club on Saturday. "You don't think a place affects you that much but I've spent a lot of time there, going back to my wilder younger days."

Orphan Annie's opened for business in 1977.

"When we close it'll be a piece of history to a lot of people," Romano said. "Music wasn't the main focus right at the beginning, but we had somebody play every Friday and Saturday night and that was it. If a band was doing very good, they'd play once a month and it developed into a blues and rock 'n' roll club."

Graced by some of the biggest names in music — James Cotten, Randy Jackson of Zebra, Pat DiNizio of the Smithereens, Hubert Sumlin and members of the Spin Doctors along with local Jersey legends such as Bernie Brausewetter, Billy Hector and Nasty Ned have all performed at Orphan Annie's. The music was often spiced up by theme parties, such as the mid-winter beach party.

Incidently, Orphan Annie's is named after Ann Romano, who is not an orphan.

The younger Romano will keep active in the music scene with his Blueskids Productions music promotion group and is looking for booking opportunities at area clubs. He'll be recording Saturday night's show for a later release on the Blueskids label.

In the fall, the venue itself will become Taverna Quattrini, featuring rustic down-home Italian fare, said new owner Ilir Bitici. Bitici's family owns several restaurants in the area, including Fiorino Ristorante in Summit.

"I've been there a few times and I definitely respect what they did," said Bitici of Orphan Annie's. "When people talk about it they always have an anecdote about the place."

Bitici said he has no plans for presenting live music at Quattrini, but it will be considered once the restaurant is set up.

The final weekend at Annie's includes The Billy Hector Band on Friday ($12 admission); the Lanza-led open jam and recording on Saturday ($5) and the American Roots Live open jam with Nasty Ned and Jr. Bradfield on Sunday (free admission) for the last night of live music at the club. The Romanos and long-time bartender Sandy McCoo will say good-bye from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday.

Orphan Annie's has meant a lot to me i met many great musicians and made friends over the years it will be sad to walk out the door tonight when the music stops.

Robert C. Malavenda (November 19, 1963 - January 26, 2008) Manville, NJ – Robert C. Malavenda, 44, entered into eternal life on Saturday, January 26, 2008 at Somerset Medical Center in Somerville. Born in Somerville, Robert had been a lifelong resident of Manville.
Robert owned & operated the Manville Music Center. His love of music and passion for guitar playing was a gift he shared with the many students he had taught over the years. He was the founder of Musicians for Children’s Charities and was a member of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks Manville-Hillsborough Lodge #2119.
Robert was predeceased by his dear father David D. Malavenda in 1976.
He will be deeply missed by his beloved mother & step father, Barbara D. & Bud Connell of Venice, FL, his adored son Zachary Malavenda of Hillsborough, his loving siblings, sister Alisa Malavenda of Milwaukee, WI and brother David Malavenda of Point Pleasant, and his cherished godchild Carly Malavenda. He also leaves behind a step brother Thomas Connell and his wife Jane of Somerset, a step sister Sandra Connell of New Providence, NJ, and several nieces and nephews each of whom will miss him dearly.
A funeral service will take place on Thursday, January 31, 2008 beginning 11:00am at Fucillo & Warren Funeral Home, 205 South Main Street, Manville, NJ 08835. Robert will be laid to rest in the family plot at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Hillsborough. Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours at the funeral home on Wednesday, January 30, 2008 from 2-4 & 7-9pm and on Thursday from 10:00am until service time. Memorial contributions to Deborah Hospital Foundation, P.O. Box 820, Browns Mills, New Jersey 08015 would be appreciated.

American Roots Live 86 and Writers in Raritan in the week leading up to this Christmas holiday was full of comfort and joy, new and old friends - and lots of love.

Perhaps as close as we'll get to living inside a Courier & Ives print in this year of 2007.

Our new friend "E" from Miami, Florida was the center piece in this holiday tapestry. "E", (above, pic:win) exuded brotherhood and goodwill during his showcase performance and had us riveted as he sang of warmth and love, rivers of honey, forgiveness and tolerance in his tremendously rich and authentic blues voice. Except for the muted bling-tone of some one's pocketed text messenger, it was "E's" heartfelt performance and a silent night.

If you weren't there - you should have been.

Many made the pilgrimage to ARL and WiR this week as if filled with anticipation of tiny hoofs on a roof-top or just filled with party spirit and seeking an outlet to let loose. What ever you came looking for - we had it.

Down to the mini marshmallows for your hot cocoa.

John Powers revved us up with his unforgettable songs, Kerry Anderson held the whole world in her hand, Corey Small thumped and hammered home his wonderful creations, Dennis Macarone reminded me of sharing the stage with the Chiffons in 1966, Joe Cerisano of Trans-Siberian Orchestra sang of fathers and sons, Mace Gill gave us Blind Willie Johnson, Mimi Nowak brought the house down, Johnny Charles ripped us all a new one, JR Bradfield smiled and accommodated, John Breen sang Christmas carols with his ukelelee... I think the only thing missing was the partridge and the pear tree.

WRITERS IN RARITAN REVIEW BY NASTY NED

ARL Roots Review Writers in Raritan

Because both of American Roots Live's big nights got bumped by bad weather, last week's Writers in Raritan is the one spectacular to report. Perhaps sweet serendipity, last week's WiR was one special show.

Therefore four special performers will get their due props here where normally we'd discuss dozens.

On Wednesday night Christine Martucci, Aster Pheonyx, Sarah Donner and Kevin Reavey delivered the goods at 10 Anderson Street much to the delight of the assembled WiR enthusiasts.

A bubbling creative community.

Besides stellar performers, last week's Writers in Raritan had more artists on hand than actually on the bill, there was a cool positive vibe in the room.

John Powers, Peter Prasa, Corey Small, Frank Victor and Vincent Inciong (all booked on upcoming shows; Powers and Prasa tonight) listened and mingled. Add the ear and awareness of JR Bradfield, and it was as if a mind-bending songwriter's-workshop could have broken out at any moment.

Kevin Reavey, on his second Writers in Raritan appearance was well received again. He kicked it off with ease. Songs, strong of hook and lyric, Kevin has a nice presence on our show. He'll be back. Clcik here for the regularly updated performance calendar to watch for Kevin Reavy's return.

Christine Martucci's music is honest and a sound you feel as much as hear.

Instantly connected to her energy, when first I met the hard rockin', soft soul of Christine Martucci just minutes before she hit the stage at a packed Stanhope House one night - then was immediately knocked out when she did. I was thrilled to introduce her at Writers in Raritan and hear her go back to her roots of solo acoustic, with a riveting set of solid, passionate originals.

Her motto is "her fans deserve the best - never disappoint.” Christine and her full band are heading into a string of headline shows at Stone Pony, Mexicali Blues, and American Roots Live, February 7th in support of her second full-length CD, "I’m All In".

Christine joins Writers in Raritan again on December 26.

She wrote in her blog about WiR, and I para-phrase [ ...the moon and the stars align and magic happens. ...a home at DeCiccos for the singers/songwriters of the world. A place, where ego and pretense are left outside, where pure musical love and admiration flow, where songs are in their purest form, as well as the songwriter. ...listened to some amazing artists, and am privileged to meet John Powers(shout out)...also had the pleasure to finally play the same night and hear Aster Pheonyx ...do yourself a favor and check out her music. ...She rocks ...I am so happy to finally hear her. ...she is talented and humble and amazing!!! ]

Well that just about sums it up for Aster Pheonyx (top photo, pic:win), except that last week Aster was absolutely untouchable, incredible and at her very best! She likes Writers in Raritan and we LOVE her. We're all so excited for her.

You really should catch her anytime and anywhere you can.

BTW Aster Pheonyx plays American Roots Live, Thursday December 27.

Which brings us to Sarah Donner the sassy, quirky, incredibly talented songstress whose songs are funny, touching and intelligent. And such a voice has Ms. Donner. We hope to see her again at WiR as soon as possible, too.

American Roots Live 85 was one very special week of live music capped by a grand celebration of Orphan Annie's 30th Anniversary on Sunday.

ARL's Sunday show fell on the day marking three decades of live music for the Romano family, who built their business and many friendships on the stuff. We were honored to host the live music gala...

...great live music from eight great bands, for eight straight hours... then the mountains of free food caused me to recall a time long ago when I discovered that free food and live music made for a good time, though that free food sequestered in a small room back-stage was for the band - Sunday at Orphan Annie's was as if everyone had a backstage pass while friends, fans, guests and bands all mingled together at the serving tables.

We remembered our late great friend Bernie Brausewetter who was forever part of the OA landscape and missed him dearly realizing that if this party were held last year, he'd be on stage with us this day.

In BB's absence we welcomed his mom Mrs. B who attended the event with Big Nancy and husband Danny Swarbrick.

Thanks to the Congregation (pic top), John Powers, JR Bradfield, Eryn Shewell Band (pic above), Tony Santos & his Blues Conspiracy with Big Nancy, Joe Morrison Project, Rockin' Daddy, The WALL and Dilly for the non-stop joyous noise.

In my 20 years playing Orphan Annie's, I've never seen so many people in that room at one time. We were absolutely mobbed! Here's to the next 30 years of live music at Orphan Annie's. Anne, Frank, Rick... congratulations.

Thursday, after we gave away 8 pairs of concert tickets to Starland Ballroom for the Pink Floyd tribute, we played host to one of the most famous anonymous singers in America; Joe Cerisano. Joe's is the soulful, raspy voice you've heard on more than fifty recognizable commercials on TV and radio. Joe was also the lead male voice on the 80's hit "Hands Across America" and, among many, many other projects including singing a recent hit for Korn - Joe Cerisano was lead singer with Trans-Siberian Orchestra in 1998 when the touring troupe went double platinum with their smash holiday album Christmas Attic.

It was great having Joe on our stage and fun hearing him and Mimi Nowak singing and having fun together with Roy Macnamara, Peter Mailliss, JR Bradfield and Anthony Gagliano rounding out the band.

With us all week, both at Writers in Raritan and American Roots Live, Joe, on his first night at ARL really enjoyed Hershall Dow and Mordechi Jones with Randy Marinelli on drums and Corey Small on bass. Then was knocked-out when Corey picked-up his acoustic guitar and did fifteen minutes of thumping, innovative original songs. He would marvel at Big Nancy's harp discipline, precision and tone three nights later.

Lisa, Jeri and Lucky, who we know and love as Cleaver June, entertained us Thursday with a rockin' high energy stint and really turning it up - turned heads.

There was a great vibe in the room all week!

ARL 85's playlist also included accomplished contributions from Johnny Thompson, Tommy Toye, Ed Pampani, Keith Autocunas, Lisa Batruch, Carlo Trentacosta, Don Howland and Ron Seibert.

At Wednesday's Writer's in Raritan, with heavies Joe Cerisano, Tommy Fuller and Mike Caruso from the Doughboys in the house; Gerry Perlinski, Peter Prasa, Sheli Aarden and Keith Monacchio bared their souls, their songcraft and solo performance to enthusiastic attendies in an especially entertaining evening of original music.

We've since booked a special show at WiR for January 9 featuring Tommy Fuller, Joe Cerisano, Sheli Aarden and Peter Prasa - mark down that date but first, don't miss the powerful December 12th line-up of Christine Martucci, Aster Pheonyx, Sarah Donner and Kevin Reavey.

Can't you see? Oh can't you see? How much fun lord, American Roots Live can be...

Six people who attended ARL 84 know exactly how much fun American Roots Live can be as they were recipients of the free Marshall Tucker Band concert tickets we gave away, compliments of Rick at Orphan Annie's. Hope you all enjoyed the MTB concert. We'll be giving away more tickets to another concert this Thursday so come and don't miss out!.

It was a great week of live music for us at ARL 84. We were entertained by many wonderful bands and musicians including Rock n' Daddy who played some very cool classic rock song choices. This is not your father's classic rock band - well, they are some body's fathers, but you know what I mean. (Frank Damelio, Rock n' Daddy, above pic by Ed Pampani)

We also heard the interesting and intelligent original sounds of the Mark Bodino Band, a real treat. MBB was our very welcomed showcase act Sunday night. (Mark, left pic: EP)

Well, it is all about LIVE music isn't it? And who knows more about live music than Orphan Annie's and American Roots Live? As matter of fact you are all invited to help us celebrate 30 years of live music this Sunday as the day marks Orphan Annie's 30th anniversary. Like the sign says, music starts at 4pm and goes til midnight. There will be 8 tremendous bands for you to groove, listen and dance to, including John Powers Band, The Congregation, Tony Santos and his Blues Conspiracy, The Wall, Eryn Shewell and so many more. There will also be a free hot & cold buffet all day and NO COVER CHARGE. Did I mention free food? See you Sunday.

Bang. Bang.

In less time than it took the pilgrims to pop-off a couple of turkeys, invite the locals, ingest, digest and recover, we pulled the trigger on a holiday celebration of roots music; a party in two parts, rivaled by no other, that included everybody and left us all wanting seconds.

Here's Brother Dave, above, from the Manhattan Island who came in with bluesman Jake Walker to spread some love. He's not flippin' you the bird, he's tearin' off a piece of greazy Telecaster, like only he can for everyone to enjoy.

Much to the delight of American Roots Live revellers, New York City's Jake Walker handled an acoustic twelve string as if it were an electric 6 string serving up biting solos and easy to swallow blues with all the trimmings.

I just had to get me some of that good feeling, too so I jumped into the serving line to do my part.

One thing we're all thankful for is that we don't have to wait for one time per year to party... we celebrate all we have to be thankful for twice a week at Orphan Annie's - once every Thursday at 9 and again every Sunday at 8. And there's always plenty of good vibe to go around.

And as if that's not enough, we also celebrate music on Wednesday nights, too, at Writers in Raritan. Here we feature the best singer-songwriters available in solo, acoustic performance of original song.

Writers in Raritan on November 28 is a "can't miss" show.

Do all you can to get to DeCicco's at 10 Anderson St. in Raritan for our next showcase to hear Tommy Fuller, Michael Brett, Chuck Schaeffer and Briz. They'll bear their souls for you, guaranteed and you will go home full and thankful.

I can't even begin to explain how much satisfaction I get from promoting and hosting American Roots Live and Writers in Raritan each week.

I have the best job in the world, if that's what you want to call it. I call it fun, fun, fun.

I get to meet and interact with a lot of people, and hear and play with many of the most talented musicians in the area, and upcoming youngsters. I get to present them on stage in combinations with other musicians. Then I get to introduce them to an enthusiastic audience and sit back to soak in the sound. The sweet music. And the audience reaction. Pinch me.

Last week's American Roots Live celebration and our on-going singer-songwriter showcase, Writers in Raritan, were no exceptions.

That's Case Newcomb from New York City (pic: win, above) choosing to rock a chair with his Les Paul. Case tore it up. He's rocked with us before and we're always happy when he's able to join us. Case is a big fan of ARL and we are big fans of his.

We also heard a young, new band who made their American Roots Live debut last week called Command Radio. When I say young, I mean 18 and 19 years old - six talented college students.

A big group with a big sound, Command Radio features sax, trumpet, guitar, bass, drums and lead singer Ryan Egan. Together they threw down some 60's roots-rock with ferocity and some well crafted, timeless-sounding originals that were both refreshing and down right fun!

While on the subject of well crafted originals, Writers in Raritan proved again to be the place to be if you're interested in witnessing very special songwriting talent up-front and personal. Last Wednesday night Tommy Fuller wrote a song on stage, on-the-spot, for the second time in three shows with us, that left our mouths open.

The song, "She's a Soul Girl" - his inspiration - an amazing young woman named Kerry Anderson who stunned us all earlier with her brilliant songcraft and phenomenal, world-class voice.

Beyonce, Marhiah, Whitney, Sarah, Alicia, Jewel... Time out. You've got to hear Kerry Anderson.

Ms. Anderson also proved a very talented musician switching from guitar to piano and back again, accompanying herself - more than aptly.

Tommy Fuller has always been a great performer, but he is also a very special songwriter. Check out his song "Worlds on Fire" at http://www.neilyoung.com/lwwtoday/index.html Last I looked, Tom's video was #1 on 'ol Neil's Living With War web charts.

Wednesday's WiR also featured the witty and passionate songs of John Kasper and Peter Prasa respectively.

What a wonderful week of music.

It started Wednesday at Writers in Raritan with John Powers and Aster Pheonyx (pic) dealing strong songcraft in solo, acoustic performance with Jim Popik and Kevin Reavey - then me and Bradfield and Jim Popik really getting into something at the end.

Aster Pheonyx, who you'll hear more of in the future, is where passion and pain meets "strong songwriting and dynamic vocals". Watch for good things for her.

Thursday's American Roots Live 81 was a talent packed, horse-choking line-up of great musicians all showin' their stuff, starting with Johnny Charles, Kim Brewer, JR Bradfield ,Ed Pampani, Tommy Toye, Tony Pilleggi, Bobby Z, Keith Autocunas, Lisa Batruch, Ron Seibert, Dice; Rich, George and Al. Randy Marinelli, Hershall Dow, Mordechai Jones, Steve Pozz, Rich Keorner, Carl Marcantonio, Corey Small, Ed Avilia, George Nicola, Jerry Lanza, Rob Bianco and Ernie Fortunato.

Continued fun Friday night when I joined the DelRosso Experience at the Blue Moon Cafe and laid it down with Bob DelRosso, Vinnie Capodice and Kevin Brennan with a sit-in visit from ol' 88's Jim Beckerman. What a groove...

Then Saturday night at the Stanhope House hearing the magnificant Jo Wymer & the Itty Bitty Band open for Christine Martucci Band, who put a solid ass whoopin' on the house with two and a half solid hours of good rockin originals and big Janis gems. Damn that girl can sing and them boys can play!

Sunday night American Roots Live 81 featured a cool new band, Reality Addiction. Dustin, Adam, Robby (pic), and Jonathon brought a good sound, a good vibe and good originals.

The night's playlist included a young new friend from Oxford, NJ on guitar named Justin Kamm, then JR Bradfield, Evan Miggs, Ed Pampani, "Phishboy" Keith Autocunas, Ron Seibert, Sticks Obremski, Chris Mongiello, Carl Marcantonio, Rich Keorner, Mike Coyle, Phil Liebergall and Gene Goodman.

Along with the fun of having our group photo taken by Win - all of us squeezed on the stage - we were treated to some serious performances at ARL 80.

Tony Santos & His Blues Conspiracy drove in from New York City to heat our house.

Tony Santos; guitar and DH Randi playing guitar with Pinky Mendez on Bass, Michael Lincoln on Drums and Bagel blowin the harp, flat out torched the room with a little help from Len DePiano.

High energy Alphabet City blues was the name of the game and Pinky Mendez was dealin'.

We had lots of great music by passionate musicians last week. Some new-comers, some regulars and some old friends we haven't seen in a while.Young Joe DeRogatis sings some old school R&B.

We introduced Kayka for the first time at American Roots Live

with some 50's blues done 60's style with a new millennium attitude accompanied by Ed Avilia on bass, Ed Pampani on drums and our new friend Mike Coyle playing harmonica.

ARL 78 kicked off with lots of people sharing Edgar and Johnny Winter stories as at least a dozen American Rooters made the Winter's show at Starland Ballroom after winning tickets for the concert last week at ARL 77 thanks to Blueskid.

On Sunday more than 40 musicians, including seven bands came together during our twelve hour marathon to raise money for the Eden Institute in Princeton at our Roots Rockin Riders Bikers Benefit for Autism co hosted by Flock Promotions.

During the day the name Bernie Brauseswetter was respectfully evoked, numerous times, as we all knew if BB were still with us, he'd be there too helping out for a good cause as he so often did.Many thanks to all the musicians who came to help, all audience members for their support, Orphan Annie's for the venue and good vibe and to AJ, Lee and Frankie for their unwavering, tireless work for the Eden Institute - and special thanks to my friend and yours, co-host JR Bradfield.

Your bed's on fire! Your bed's on fire!

That's what I've been saying to my friend Copa - the multi-instrumentalist best known as the keyboard player in my earliest bands, Shadowfax and R Band and a more recent Famous Chili Dogs - for as long as I can remember, because he played so hot. At least I think that's why I always said that.

Copa and I spent a lot of time together. In the late 70's we traveled to places like Houma, Louisiana and Hafuf, Saudi Arabia and almost everywhere in between - in bands that had little to do with us - then spent most of the early 80's writing songs and recording comedy skits in his home studio behind gallons of producer juice and piles of other stuff.

Well, Copa, who now lives about a hundred miles south of here, made it up to American Roots Live 77 at Orphan Annie's last week to play with us all. He brought his keyboards, but spent the night burning up the bass - I told you he was hot - and we loved it as much as he did, as he made many new friends. Thanks Cope.

Last week was full of great players as we welcomed back our old ARL friends Jimmy Somma and Tommy Hayes and Peter Malliss - and some old favorite regulars like Johnny Charles and Evil Dick of the Congregation.

And we gave away 6 pairs of tickets to see Johnny Winter and Edgar Winter in concert at the Starland Ballroom compliments of BluezKid. Everybody was smilin' big time!

We lit up the northern sky at 77 as we have many times at ARL and just as we'll do again this Thursday night and ALL DAY Sunday, October 21st at our "Roots Rockin' Riders, Bikers' Benefit for Autism. Doors open at 12N, music starts at 2pm and goes til midnight featuring Johnny Thompson at 2pm, Phil 'n the Blanks 3pm, The Congregation 4pm, Nasty Ned & the Dogs 5pm, The Jerry Lanza Band 6pm, Johnny Charles & the Straight 8 Blues Kings 7pm, Katmandu at 8pm and then an American Roots Live All Star Jam the rest of the way - and I'm pretty sure we're going to have some "girl power" coming!

(STIRLING, NJ) -- American Roots Live with Nasty Ned, in association with Flock Promotions, announced today a benefit concert to raise money for the Eden Institute and awareness for autism; Sunday, October 21st at Orphan Annie's, 1255 Valley Rd. in Stirling, NJ.

"Roots Rockin' Riders" Bikers' Benefit for Autism is an all day concert fund raiser featuring some of the areas most popular musical acts. Doors open at 12 noon and music will start at 2pm running until 12 midnight. A $5 minimum donation is requested.

The show, hosted by American Roots Live's Nasty Ned will also feature Nasty Ned & the Dogs, Johnny Charles & the Straight 8 Blues Kings, The Congregation, The Jerry Lanza Band with very special guest, Phil 'n the Blanks, Johnny Thompson, Katmandu and an American Roots Live All Star jam to round out the evening.

The motorcycle community is strongly encouraged to attend as they have proved year after year to be generous supporters of children's charity events put on by Flock Promotions. Preferred parking for motorcycles will be available.

The Eden Institute, a New Jersey-based nonprofit organization, was founded in 1975 with a mission to improve the lives of children and adults with autism and their families. Parents and professionals alike joined together to develop a family oriented, multifaceted program with a well-trained and dedicated faculty. Inherent in Eden's founding was the commitment to provide a cost-effective, community-based alternative to institutionalization and to offer programming that would meet the changing needs of children and adults with autism.

Autism is a complex, lifelong developmental disability that impacts the development of the brain in the areas of social interaction and communication skills, the result of a neurological disorder affecting the functioning of the brain.

Autism currently affects an estimated 1 in 150 child births (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2007) and is four times more common in boys than girls. It is found in all racial, ethnic and social groups and its overall incidence is consistent throughout the world. Family income, lifestyle and education do not affect the chance of occurrence.

Children and adults with autism typically have difficulties with verbal and nonverbal communication, social interactions and leisure or play activities. Aggressive or self-injurious behavior may also be present.

There are no medical tests for diagnosing autism, so an accurate diagnosis must be based on observation of the individual's communication, behavior and developmental levels.

No single cause for autism has been identified, but there is general acceptance that abnormalities in brain structure or function are at the root. Brain scans show differences in the shape and structure of the brain in children with autism versus those who do not have autism, and researchers continue to investigate a variety of theories and links. Autism is not a mental illness nor is it caused by bad parenting. Children with autism and related pervasive developmental disabilities are born with the disorder or the potential to develop it.

American Roots Live is not a typical open mic or open jam. It's not some casual effort by a part time musician to plug in and make some noise. American Roots Live is a legitimate show in a legitimate music room, not some neighborhood shot & beer joint - it's the longest running of its kind - and it stands for roots music preservation.

ARL is an equal opportunity celebration of the music. It's for passing the torch to the next generation in an effort to keep the fire burning AND to create an outlet for players to play and network as the "live" music scene is shrinking... and venues are dying off one by one...

RARITAN, NJ) -- American Roots Live with Nasty Ned, the popular, weekly open-mic celebration of American roots music - currently in its 76th week - announced today, the creation of "Writers in Raritan", a singer/songwriter showcase series that will take place every Wednesday night, 8:30 pm at DeCicco's, 10 Anderson St. in Raritan, NJ starting October 17, 2007. No cover charge.

Featuring the area's finest veteran and upcoming singer/songwriters, Writers in Raritan is not an open mic event like its "American Roots Live" parent show. Instead, Writers in Raritan is a pre-booked by invitation event showcasing the most talented singer/songwriters available to play 30 to 40 minute performance sets every Wednesday night. Writers in Raritan will also feature irregularly scheduled songwriter's workshops conducted by the show's co-host, renowned performer and songwriter, JR Bradfield.

Writers in Raritan will be hosted by American Roots Live founder and promoter; performer/producer, Nasty Ned.The "roots" and "live music" proponent says, "we want this showcase series to help people better connect with live music by focusing on the song and the artist who writes it. We'll have no drums, no bands and no accompanying players. The song in its stripped down form is the star".

DeCicco's in Raritan offers an intimate music setting with cold beer, blue-collar prices and an earthy, worn-brick back drop reminiscent of a Greenwich Village venue. The show host adds, "With the train station two blocks away, connecting us to Hoboken and New York, DeCicco's is perfect for our series". Artists BiosRobert Ross is a distinctive and soulful singer who knows how to sell a song. Rafael Alvarez wrote in Guitar World magazine, "Robert Ross is an imaginative writer with files of Twilight Zone tales", while Tom "Bones" Malone of Blues Brothers fame calls Ross, "the new Bob Dylan". Bill Carlton of the NY Daily News once wrote, "Robert Ross is a fine singer, a snappy lyricist, and an even better blues rock guitarist ... time after time Ross delivers the goods".Ross is an able guitarist indeed. His spine-tingling solos tell stories words alone cannot express. Blues legend Albert King once said of Ross' guitar playing, "He's so fast, lightning would have to get on roller skates to catch him". Robert Makin of the Aquarian once wrote of Ross, "If you closed your eyes you'd swear Ray Charles was playing Buddy Guy's guitar. In 1980 Johnny Winter recorded Robert's composition, "Sittin' In The Jailhouse" for Columbia then re-released the song on Legacy in 1994 as part of a "best of" CD entitled, "A Rock 'n" Roll Collection". Robert Ross is a NY Music Award winner for Best Blues Artist.Having performed on network television's "Alive at Five" and "Good Morning America" as well as the Chicago Blues Festival, Montreal International Jazz Festival and countless venues large and small across the U.S. and Europe, Robert holds the enviable distinction of having played on stage with Muddy Waters, Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Robert Ross lives in New York City, NY.

John Powers, at 28 years of age is already a veteran of the New Jersey music scene. Having spent a third of his life in recording studios and clubs across the northeast, he has built a loyal fan base of music lovers and fellow musicians. John taught himself to play guitar at age seven and by 15 had recorded his first EP in New York City. He is about to release his much anticipated, first full-length CD, "Highway Lines" in the coming weeks.John spent a year as co-host of American Roots Live with Nasty Ned and most recently opened for John Eddie at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park. A young man with a special ability to communicate age-old human experience through music, John Powers writes and performs songs that get stuck in your head, your heart and your soul. There is no escaping them playing over and over again in your mind once you've heard them. John Powers lives in Bridgewater, NJ.

The Wiliamzboy is a regular performer at the House of Blues in Atlantic City, the Bitter End in New York and the Trocadero in Philadelphia. He is a singer/songwriter whose ferocious live performance and gritty original music has helped him garner acclaim and notoriety wherever he plays. Equally at home playing bar-room-blues, ramshackle folk, alternative country or acoustic funk, the Wiliamzboy's sound is timeless. Playing guitar and harmonica on a neck-rack, he sings soulful, moving songs that are uniquely his own. With sincerity in his voice and forthright truth in his music, his songs speak their own language. The Wiliamzboy lives in Philadelphia, PA.

Bruce Jepson, a multi-instrumentalist and singer/songwriter delivers songs that are well crafted and from the heart. A central New Jersey native, Bruce is a two-time finalist in The Chris Austin songwriting contest at Merlefest in Wilkesboro, North Carolina and has twice performed at the International Bluegrass Music Association's "Songwriter Showcase" during the "World of Bluegrass" festival in Louisville, Kentucky. Along with festival work Bruce has appeared at such venues as the Stone Pony, CBGB'S, Albert Hall, John and Peter's, Turning Point and many more. He is largely known in the tri state area as the lead singer and guitarist for bluegrass band "String Fever". Look for Bruce Jepson's first solo release, "I'm Still Blue" in the coming weeks. Bruce Jepson lives in Somerset County, NJ.

Peter Prasa says, he "wasn't born for these times", but everyone he's touched is grateful for his life at this time. Like many songwriters, he's taken life experience and put it to words. In his songs he displays melodic explosions of depth and level headedness with a dash of confusion. A multi-instrumentalist, he writes about lost love, found love, heaven, pain and even a recipe for Banana Bread. His father's first guitar, left in the basement of the family's home in Hillside NJ, where Peter spent his teenage years, became his first songwriting tool. Peter's song, "Angels Breath" gained an honorable mention from VH-1. Peter Prasa is a piano technician where while tuning pianos, some of his compositions are crafted. He says, "Everything has a song in it and every emotion creates a melody". Peter Prasa lives in Somerville, NJ.

JR Bradfield (co-host) is a singer/songwriter and guitar virtuoso who has logged over 100K skymiles during the 90's playing venues throughout the Caribbean, Mexico, North Africa, the Middle East and the U.S. He has entertained Governors and Officials of the British West Indies, the Royal Family of Qatar, played the Royal Palace in Abou Sofaine, Tunisia, and has entertained guests at Wyndham, Allegro, and Club Med Resorts. Bradfield's recordings showcase his comedic songwriting prowess. His repertoire features hilarious compositions like "Butt n' a Half" and the "Honky Blues". JR Bradfield lives in Piscataway, NJ.

Nasty Ned (host) has been performing and writing since 1966. He released his first recordings in 1981 and is best known as the singing, harmonica playing front man of Nasty Ned & the Famous Chili Dogs, and for his studio work and live performance with Johnny Charles and others. Ned is founder and host of American Roots Live with Nasty Ned and Writers in Raritan and is currently working to complete a cable television show entitled American Roots Live. Wow, what a week ARL 75 was. A week of new friends, horns and GIRL power!

New friend, singer/guitarist Ed Saultz from Philipsburgh, NJ performed a solo set. In touch with his roots, Ed played songs that evidenced the European influence on American roots music. Very enjoyable.

We met Mordeci who joined good 'ol Hershall Dow on stage with Randy Marinelli, and as I said earlier - GIRL power.

Roy Macnamara took the stage with a back-up band comprised almost entirely of women. Lisa Lewis on Drums, Cat Viksne playing fiddle, Lisa Batruch and her Jembi drum shared vocals with Mimi Nowak and Lucky and our new friend Sandy Lynne on saxophone - oh, and JR Bradfield played bass.

After a while Lisa switched to guitar and the women took over the stage, employing Bradfield on bass and Randy to play drums.

Wow! With over 30 musicians and bands on the 74 playlist, American Roots Live with Nasty Ned proved again why it is far and away the premiere open mic celebration anywhere.
Both nights were filled with incredible music by such notables as

John Powers, Johnny Charles (pic), Dean Schot, Arne Englund, our new friends from Toronto, Canada, touring band; Vanderpark and many more.For six years now, Vanderpark has been creating a buzz above the border by playing everywhere they can. They've also showed off their songwriting savvy, tight harmonies and serious musicianship opening shows for the legendary Little Feet across the great north as well as playing with the Spin Doctors and others.Now on tour in the states, we were fortunate enough to be treated to a Vanderpark performance when Dave, Marcus, Al and Hanaya took time from the long road to stop in at ARL last week. If you haven't heard of Vanderpark yet, you will.There is an undeniable dynamic that exists between its members making a Vanderpark show easy and refreshing. With three show dates left in the US including Cincinnati and Cleveland before returning to Toronto to celebrate their CD release party at the famed El Mocambo, try to catch Vanderpark whenever and where ever you can. If you missed week 72 of American Roots Live with Nasty Ned, you missed some of the most honest, young performances of individual roots styles you may've ever seen or heard... anywhere.First, the long-awaited arrival of Smokestack the Foothill Fury, from north Georgia, was nothing less than inspiring and entertaining. Full of fury, like a rolling and tumbling ball of energy, Smokestack played raw, down-from-the-hills blues. A refreshing slap in the face to pretentious, over-produced pop.Here's a back view of his home-made, one-man-band-contraption and guitar. (tip-bucket normally hangs in front.) He plucked, strumed and slid all over that guitar attacking the neck from below and over top. With wailing vocals and kicking feet, Smokestack the Foothill Fury is a crowd pleaser and authentic bluesman.In his own words he is carrying the torch for a music that he loves and encompassing the very feeling of what good ole' blues is all about.We are proud to have presented him on our stage and look forward to his return. He's coming back, maybe as early as next week after a swing through New England and Nova Scotia. Keep an eye out.Then, we were thrilled to welcome back our friend Johnny Thompson, one of the smoothest, most talented young blues guitarists in New Jersey.We're used to hearing Johnny burn it up on the electric guitar, but were far from disappointed by his flawless, enthusiastic set of acoustic pickin' and singin'. At just 22 years of age Johnny Thompson is facing sunny horizons.We look forward to his return very soon.Hershall Dow, with a sound and presence as big as Texas was a crowd favorite twice at ARL 72. Not just for musicians anymore!

Actually, it never was meant to be that way, but there have been more musicians than music fans at American Roots Live with Nasty Ned as word spread like wild fire within the musician's community that ARL is the place to be to play and have great fun with other top notch musicians.

And when top notch musicians get together with other top notch musicians to have fun, well... this is something a music fan does not want to miss - then, given the great food and drink at Orphan Annie's and the cool music prizes we give away on stage...

well, there is no other show like it anywhere! Here, The Congregation filled our room with a higher power of sound late Sunday night at ARL 68. You wanna talk about fun -

Divine.Then we picked up right where we left off with American Roots Live 69

as Carlo Trentacosta did his slide thing and we all came together again in the name of music

Thursday night at Orphan Annie's. Groove bassist extraodinare, Todd Lanka had more than just fun on his mind when he showed up Thursday night to air it out on guitar - that is, before he eyed Bertha laying across the floor.

With permission, Todd picked up Bertha and slapped her around for awhile(upright bass )

as I blew harp and Bradfield plunked Stumpy(jr's homade guitar )...Bertha is JR Bradfield's upright acoustic bass and Stumpy is the guitar he built using an antique banjo ring, a dobro resonator and a hunk of tree stump from his back yard.

Then, Sunday night's ARL 69 was down right dilly-icious as Basking Ridge, NJ's Frank, Neil and Amanda showed up to perform their newly formed trio called Dilly. Bright acoustic guitars twinkled as Amanda's soaring vocals kept a good sized crowd satisfied.

I hope Dilly comes back soon as I forgot to have them autograph the ARL All Stars signature guitar - which by the way will be raffled-off after September 21. Raffle tickets are going fast for the September drawing, so please don't say I didn't warn you. If you want that guitar, come and get your $3 raffle ticket before they're all gone. The BluezKid and me are always at odds over the terms "open mic" and "open jam". He doesn't like one and I don't care for the other, especially when it comes to describing American Roots Live with Nasty Ned; the premier, equal opportunity celebration of roots music, recognizing Jazz, Blues, Country, Rock&Roll, R&B, Rock, Bluegrass, Folk, Gospel, Soul, BeeBop, Dixieland, Zydeco, Cajun, Native and everything in between that came before... See?American Roots Live is open to all but is much more than an open-mic or an open-jam. ARL's aim is to preserve and promote roots music with equal opportunity celebrations that are run like shows and in effect are showcases where the musician who graces the stage is promoted!

That's partly why I'm always spouting, "there is no other show like it anywhere!"

ARL is the twice weekly live music event where you can hear great music with your dinner - then, if you are a musician, play for an enthusiastic audience after dinner - and ARL is where parents can bring their youngsters to listen or to perform live music on stage with professional musicians.American Roots Live is also an event where fans, musicians and youngsters can win prizes like classic roots music CDs, local artist's CDs, national music magazines, autographed Hohner harmonicas, delicious baked goods (yes, cookies and donuts) and even All Stars autographed electric guitars!

Also the aim of ARL is to rejuvenate an ever-shrinking "live music scene" by bringing music into venues on nights other than Fridays and Saturdays - bringing attention to "LIVE" music - and waging a fair fight against Karaoke, bad DJs, Texas Hold 'ems, Jello wrestling and other culturally deficient activities. ARL encourages everyone to support live music whenever and where ever it is performed.

We commend our brother Len DePiano and good friends Dean Shott and Todd Wolfe for creating other live music opportunities for musicians - and ARL recognizes other live music "open sessions" popping up in other areas across the state and around the country.

Go! It's all about the music. Robert Zee knows it. Zee knows it's about playing it live, having fun with it and sharing the roots of the music with kids. The music is the heartbeat of our culture. We can't forget it.

American Roots Live 68 at Orphan Annie's in Stirling, NJ was another great two nights of, well... all that I've been talking about.Come out and see for yourself.

If a picture really is worth a thousand words what does this picture of Ken Brodack from Fort Myers, Florida, taken at a recent American Roots Live celebration tell you?This is why I say ARL is a good way to make the best of just another Thursday night and a great way to cure the Sunday night blues! For 67 weeks - now two nights per week; Thursdays and Sundays - American Roots Live with Nasty Ned is where musicians and fans, from near and far, come to meet and party in the name of music. If you haven't joined us already you really should!

Kate Weber knows a thing or two about having fun. And she knows about the music; where it comes from, the artists who made it, (long before she was born) and she knows it about as well as she knows how to belt out any Janis Joplin song you can throw at her!Our ARL co host, JR Bradfield, the hardest working man in the show, knows how to have fun too. She came down out of the hills of eastern Pennsylvania to tear us all a new one last week at American Roots Live 66 after a too-long hiatus - but she was back, and that's all that mattered. Sue T. ripped through a few rockin' blues numbers, Hound Dog, Cross Cut Saw and others, like a pole cat on a mission. ...and she sang and played better than ever!American Roots Live 66 saw many incredible performances by outstanding musicians on our stage last week, all in the name of music and fun. We also saw the return of another ARL favorite; Miss Kate Weber, and with the good doctor, Greg Louganis joining her on keyboards.Kate Weber and Sue T. were gracious enough to sign our ARL All Stars autographed guitar being raffled off to raise funds for our new stage equipment - making it an even more sought-after collectible. Oh man, we do have fun at American Roots Live!

But sometimes what happens is I'm forced to combine two weeks of roots reviews,

for one reason or another - and such is the case this time for two reasons; busy and busy - AND for being out of town on personal business.I am grateful, however, the shows went on as they did during this busy time with lots of great players and loads of fun, but especially grateful for the show in my absence that went so smoothly due specifically to the spirit, dedication and team work of ARL All Stars JR Bradfield, John Powers, Len DePiano and Mimi Nowak. Thanks guys.I've combined the ARL 64 and 65 playlists here and peppered a few cool pics through-out; thanks to photogs Win and Ed Pampani, but have to close on a somewhat somber note.With two shows per week, Thursday at 9 and Sunday at 8, ARL 64 and 65 covers a total of four shows. RIP brother.Bill PerryDon’t Know Nothin’ About Love(Blind Pig)Bill Perry may know nothin’ about love, but he sure knows how to rock the blues. And that’s exactly what the veteran bluesman from Chester, NY does on his fourth Blind Pig release in four years with one funky infectious groove after another.Don’t Know Nothin’ About Love finds Perry at his artistic best as once again he is matched in the studio with producer and New York City blues legend, Popa Chubby. And Chubby seems to know something about Perry. He brings out the best in the artist capturing on disc the raw power and brilliant honesty Bill is known for in his live performances. The album features eight new and vigorous Perry originals and three covers, including a remarkable remake of the Temptations classic, “Ball of Confusion” complete with a ferociously rocking guitar.The title track pines traditional, while “My Baby Loves to Dance” makes you want to. “Can’t Afford to Die” is a smoldering tone-tender blues that Perry smokes way down low proving that phrasing and feel define an artist more than anything else.To say Bill Perry’s guitar talks is an understatement. It actually screams and cries and it preaches. It deeply communicates the blues. In fact on the self penned, socially relevant “Down in New Orleans” Perry brings us even deeper than the blues with a dark chill that will make you feel the flood waters rise.I will not make a comparison here, but must say, I can’t remember being spoken to so intimately by a guitar since Stevie Ray’s. Sunday night, Orphan Annie's in Stirling, NJ was full of daddies...In the house and on the stage.We thank mothers and children for sharing their daddies with us at American Roots Live 60 and, thank the daddies for sharing live music with their kids.Again our open Celebration of American Roots featured an eager youngster performing with us on stage in the name of music preservation. Emily Mulhall, an 11 year old singer from Hampton, NJ belted out a 1940's styled cabaret number showing real presence and poise with nice range and vocal discipline. Her proud father Jeff looked on.Room silent. Could'a heard a pin drop. Emily warbled wonderfully accompanied only by Nancy Coletti on piano.Orphan Annie's is a great family placeto enjoy good music and good food together. A clean, well managed establishment, we thank Orphan Annie's for helping us feel right at home. It was evident on Father's Day. Lots of smiles, and fun and good food.And on this night it was kids winning a lot of the cool raffle prizes! 4 year old Emily Wegman won an autographed Hohner Harmonica while Emily Mulhall held the winning ticket for the Entenmann's Chocolate Donuts. Others went home with music CD's; Charlie Parker, one autographed by Pinetop Perkin's, and the latest issues of Elmore Magazine "Saving American Music".Another kick Sunday was Fickle, a young band out of Covington, KY. Currently touring, but with a night off, they dropped in at Orphan Annie's in NJ to play ARL on their way between gigs - Saturday in Quincy, MA and Monday, Baltimore, MD.It was great meeting and hearing Brian Martin, Dennis DeZarn, Ian McGee and Chris Mueller.After their set, Fickle hung out and dug other performers, commenting on myspace.com/americanroots, they enjoyed playing with us and it was inspiring to see what goes on at American Roots Live. I can remember seeing Elvis on the Ed Sullivan Show gyrating inside a little black & white-glass-globe-picture-tube. I know. That tells you I've been around for awhile - and yes, I've seen a lot.

But Sunday night at ARL 58, I saw the Wiliamzboy - the bluesy, folk-a-billy artist from Philadelphia at his finest and playing with a drummer and bass player. And I saw Ron Michael's, the guy who pitches Aleeve on TV these days, blowing sparks from his trumpet and flugelhorn simultaneously.

That's something I never saw before.

Singers, songwriters and musicians from everywhere, as well as music fans of all root styles, came to celebrate American roots music at American Roots Live with Nasty Ned on our first night at Orphan Annie's.

With lot's of your favorite players and a good blend of new comers, the well-known roots roadhouse on Valley Road in Stirling, NJ took on a whole new glow.

From blues to jazz to be-bop and rock & roll – to country, R&B, folk, bluegrass and soul – all are the birthplace of today’s music at our American Roots Live open mic celebrations.

You can’t hear all of this music on the radio anymore but you can hear it live when you come to ARL at OA's on Sunday nights.

American Roots Live has always been amazing - and it still is, but what's really amazing is that ARL is still getting bigger and hotter, and me... more excited.

At ARL 58, singers smoked, drummers sizzled, guitarists burned and the lucky raffle winner of a box of Entenmann's Chocolate Donuts managed to get the tasty treats out of the building before the icing melted.

Others won autographed harmonicas, music CDs and copies of Elmore Magazine. But have no doubt, ARL 58 was all about the music, and that was very hot!

Again, they came from near and far and some, among the finest musicians (and baked goods) on the planet.

American Roots Live 57 was another fun night of good friends and great music as we packed our bags down at the station and hit the road heading for the hills.
We heard our old friend Dean Shot tear off a few with Johnny Charles and Freddie Mac - Bradfield and Piano layin' it down with Powers - Bones plunkin' bass with Robert Zee and more.
The spirit of the players is what it's all about - everyweek - everywhere at ARL.
Thanks to John Powers, JR Bradfield, Len DePiano, Ed Pampani, Mimi Nowak, Johnny Charles, Bones Sanford, Robert Zee, Roy Macnamara, Josh Gebhardt, Brandon Kurzawa, Metal Bob, Freddie Macarone, Ron Michaels, Dean Shot, Walter Foot, Cal Ritchie and Byron J, our last night at the Rail rocked.
We're all excited to be opening American Roots Live on Sunday, June 3 in Stirling at Orphan Annie's, a venue that's been featuring live music since the 1970's. Rick Romano and BluezKid Productins has been running "open jams" on Sunday nights for years hosted by the likes of Bernie Brausewetter and many others. It seems fitting that American Roots Live will be taking over that slot.

ARL Roots Review 56 Our open mic celebration of American roots music is really spreading its wings. Week after week American Roots Live gets better and better and gains more and more notoriety among musicians and music fans as people from far and near continue to stream in.
There really is no other show like it anywhere!
As we gear up for HoneyBoy Dupree's return to our stage from Phoenix, Arizona in July, we've played host over the last two weeks to players from NYC, Allentown, PA, Cherry Hill, NJ and all whistle stops in between.
As was American Roots Live 55, the Royal Memorial for BB, this past week's ARL 56 was spectacular. Player after performer after picker after participant - each as impressive as the one before.
What astounds us all is not only the abilities of these fine musicians who make the pilgrimage each week, but the joy and passion they bring to the stage. With each show the sweat music of our immensely talented All Stars fills the room and - matched by the energy and ability of our newcomers - this is what marks American Roots Live as the premiere open mic show anywhere.
American Roots Live may be habit forming.
John Powers' love of song and enthusiasm for performing is contagious. JR Bradfield's tireless dedication to the live show is invaluable and tantamount to our success. Len DePiano, Mimi Nowak and Ed Pampani - invaluable to ARL and a joy to watch. Each is the type of warm, engaging person that is a pleasure to meet. Come out and get to know them. Play with them. You'll be hooked - you'll want more.

Thoughtfully, Arlene Schar, violinist and American Roots Live All-Star; Hellertown, PA, circulated a mother's day card among ARL 55 participants on the first of Bernie's Memorial nights Thursday at the Rail in Bound Brook, NJ.Then, Friday, she "over-nighted" the mother's day card full of our signatures and well wishes to BB's mom with my phone number on the back.As Arlene had hoped would happen, Bernie's mom got the card on Saturday and decided to come to 55 for the second night of the Royal Memorial for her son on Sunday.Before the second show, as the Rail filled with players, friends and fans my cell phone rang.Mrs. B arrived that night, driven by Bernie's good friend Dawn, just as the evening's music was starting. She appreciated all of the talented, dedicated players who showed up on both nights in her son's honor, and so do I.They came from near and far.Just off his tour of Holland and England, our friend Jake Walker came in from New York City on Thursday to join 28 other performers at the Royal Memorial.On Sunday, it was our friend the King of the Rust Belt Blues; Mike Dugan from Allentown, PA with bass player and ARL All-Star Rob Fraser joining 21 others to play and pay tribute.Yes, the hottest players in the area made it to our stage to honor BB. No Johnny Charles show tonight

No American Roots Live show Sunday

The Rail was promised a final inspection by Friday so they could re-open this weekend and they were let down - the inspector was a no show - so there will be no shows Saturday and Sunday.

American Roots Live 55 and the tribute to Bernie Brausewetter will happen Thursday, May 10th and Sunday, May 13th. Hope to see you all then.

Nasty Ned & the Noo Dogs and Johnny Charles & the Straight 8 Blues Kings will also be rescheduled at later dates.

We've had to deal with a lot of adversity over the first year and a month of American Roots Live with Nasty Ned.

There was the repaving on Main Street at ARL 3 where the parking lot at the Rail was not accessible to vehicles and we had to carry all the equipment in from a parking lot across the street, dodging trucks, tractors and machines spewing hot tar - and the show went on. Duane Chez will remember.

There was ARL 8 almost being cancelled after flames shot from the manhole covers on Main Street after a speeding train blasted past the station blowing a transformer - but the show went on.

There was the difference in visions with old management that sent ARL 18 thru 28 scrambling into two different venues. Then, the last minute cancellation of our night-before-Thanksgiving show because one of those venues insisted on doing something else, so we took the show to Phoenix, AZ with HoneyBoy Dupree and Paris James - yet ARL continued uninterrupted another week. Then upon returning from Phoenix finding the aforementioned rogue venue had pulled the plug on us altogether - and still American Roots Live went uninterrupted thanks to Win and Mike and Lynn at the Rail in Bound Brook for giving us temporary asylum on Sunday nights.

Yes, American Roots Live has had its share of adversity - and joys and triumphs, too - now expanded to two nights per week at the Rail with our consecutive weeks streak unbroken all the way up to ARL 54.

Then a force so great, known as mother nature, spilled millions of gallons of water over the banks of the Raritan River and into the streets of Bound Brook drowning Main Street under 7 feet of water and ARL 55 with it. Thankfully, because the Rail sits highest on Main Street, our stage was an island.

As if the sky was crying over the loss of our late brother Bernie Brausewetter, the rain continued for days turning downtown Bound Brook into what looked like the ninth ward - thank God no life was lost to the water.

Well, we can't reverse mother nature. But we can dry ourselves off - clean up the mess - and get back to work, and that's exactly what we're going to do.

Please come to the Rail as we bring back the music Saturday night with yours truly joining Johnny Charles & the Straight 8 Blues Kings and Sunday night for the return of American Roots Live!

55 has finally arrived and we couldn't be happier - but on such short notice, we've decided that the Royal Memorial Show for BB will be next week, both Thursday and Sunday at American Roots Live 56.

Many players pledged to be there as tribute to the big man when we thought we'd be open two weeks ago, so I'm asking you all now to be there May 10th and 13th to play in Bernie's honor.

Now, a little lost in the shuffle was ARL 54 because I was in no condition to write a proper Roots Review, following those tremendous nights of music, as we had just learned of our dear friend's passing. So I'll use this space today to recognize some of those incredible musicians who made American Roots Live 54 the incredible musical extravaganza that it was - we were all on an all-time high!

Kickin' off with John Powers and all our fantastic regulars, proper kudos must go out to a 16 year old song bird named Brianna Beatie making her ARL debut.

Veteran performer Nancy Coletti, who sings the Sea World commercial on TV, accompanied the youngster on piano then sang and scatted up a storm for us and brought the house down.

Ron Michaels, TV's Mr. Aleeve, wailing on his trumpet and fluggle horn. JR Bradfield, Mimi Nowak, Len DePiano, Jaimo Flynn, Roy Mcnamara, Arne Englund, Dennis Macarone and on and on - it was wild. (Please scroll down a bit to see the entire roll call. Everyone was great.)

BERNARD J. BRAUSEWETTER, 52, South Plainfield MusicianBernard Brausewetter of South Plainfield died Sunday April 15 at Beth Israel Medical Center, Newark, NJ of complications from diabetes and congestive heart failure. He was 52. He was predeceased by his father, Bernard, who passed away in 1986. Survivors include his mother, Norma, of South Plainfield and an aunt, Ruth Hebert of Thorofare, NJ. Born Sept. 10, 1954, in Muhlenberg Hospital, Plainfield, Bernie began playing guitar as a 7-year old. He graduated from South Plainfield High School. He was known to music fans around the Garden State as leader of a blues-rock trio, B.B. & The Stingers. The trio recorded several albums, including a self-titled debut album and “First Blues Band on Venus.” His albums got airplay in Germany, France, Switzerland and Scandinavian countries. His new CD has not yet been releasedHe moved to Ohio and played with Silverhoof around the Midwest in the early 1970’s, then returned to New Jersey. He formed his own trio, B.B. & The Stingers, in 1990, and frequented the Melody Bar and other New Brunswick-area venues. His guitar playing style was fluid and dynamic, and he always knew the importance of playing as part of an ensemble. He could play the most difficult classic rock guitar solos note for note, and he astonished his audiences with his fluidity and dexterity. In the 1990’s, he joined Glen Burtnik and Slaves of New Brunswick and always performed at Burtnik’s annual Christmas extravaganzas. He also was an integral part of Supreme Court with Nancy Swarbrick. More recently, he began playing with original E-Street Band drummer Vini Lopez in Steel Mill, playing early songs written by Bruce Springsteen. He was a self-employed guitar teacher and performer. He worked teaching guitar students from his home in South Plainfield, which he shared with his mother after his father passed away. He enjoyed a great reputation as a teacher and performer and he had legions of students who came to him for guitar lessons. He shared stages with Johnny Winter, Rick Derringer and dozens of other nationally known guitarists. He went to Memphis in 2003 and 2004 to compete in the International Blues Talent Competition representing the Jersey Shore Jazz and Blues Foundation. Unlike many other musicians, he took an active interest in what other bands were doing in clubs. On a bill with two or three other bands at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park or the Court Tavern in New Brunswick, he would always hang out after his set to hear another band or two before leaving. “There’s always something new you can learn,” he would say, and he often said his decision to pursue guitar teaching from his home “was the best decision I ever made.” One of his protégés, Matt O’ Ree, has begun to make a name for himself nationally, playing in a similar blues-rock style. He was an avid science fiction buff and enjoyed fishing when he wasn’t performing, practicing or teaching guitar. A musical memorial service and a celebration of the life and music of Bernie Brausewetter is planned for coming months at a yet-to-be-determined venue. I've been excited with anticipation to review the first two absolutely amazing American Roots Live shows of our second year celebrating the music, but now find myself seriously lost for words.

ROOTS REVIEW 52 HAPPY 1 YEAR ANNIVERSARY !

Our one year anniversary celebration of American Roots Live at The Rail last week had me feeling like Lou Gehrig. By that I mean I felt like the luckiest man on the face of the earth.

And when I think about American Roots Live and the tight little artist's community that has come together over the past year, I realize I am the luckiest man on the planet. To be surrounded by so many talented and dedicated musicians and coordinators who have all helped me realize a dream, and a dream that has become their own reality as well - working together to preserve American roots music for future generations - I am most fortunate indeed.

American Roots Live 52 Sunday night was a masterpiece. After the raucous crowd response to our national anthem played on harmonica, Chuck Wegman and Evil Dick of The Congregation embraced the honor of kicking off the show with an unplugged, unpretentious set of Congregation originals and covers. Awesome.

Then, on to the youngsters. Nine year old Brent Meyer, with his big Fender Stratocaster and his parents and sister in attendance, stood proud center stage picking strings before an enthusiastic audience supported by Jaimo Flynn on drums, JR Bradfield on bass, Len DePiano on keys and ARL Ambassador from Pennsylvania, Billy K on guitar.

After Brent breezed through his set he was followed on stage by his seniors, 14 year old Dolan Kutzman playing drums and 16 year old Tim Beery on bass, both rockin' in the free world with Dolan's father, Billy K center stage.

What followed was a roots revival to be rivalled by no other - remember, there's no other show like American Roots Live anywhere!

ARL 52 Sunday was also the night of the all-stars autographed guitar contest, completing the blaze benefit for Harry Okie and his kids who lost their home to fire just before Christmas '06.

Phil Ouellette of Union, NJ was the lucky recipient of the autographed guitar donated by Manville Music. He smiled with pride in accepting the prize knowing that he - along with many other people - donated to the cause that, all totalled, raised $1,960.02.

No one knows from where the two pennies came, but they were in the bucket and appreciated none-the-less.

Everybody was jacked both Sunday and Thursday nights as tremendous performances were put in by the afore mentioned players as well as John Powers, Mimi Nowak, Ed Pampani, Big Daddy & the Wild Cats, Roy MacNamara, Johnny Charles, Robert Zee, Snakeman Runyan, Arne Englund, Metal Bob, Gavin Lawrence, Randy Marinelli, Al Madison, Johnny Thompson, Uncle Wayne, Bob Giglio, Chris Porto, John DiGiovanni, Steve Pozzelanti, Ray Mack, Mike Carrol, Dennis Macarone, Saxophone Joe and Cal Ritchie with special thanks going to Elliot "Win" Newcomb , Elmore Magazine and much appreciation to many others.

Also, as an aside - for those aware and concerned - Monday's surgery was a success and I'm recovering nicely wrapped in terry cloth and perched atop a bag of frozen peas. Thank you all for your generous gifts and offers of assistance, and your prayers, thoughtful emails and phone calls.

I'll see you tomorrow night down at the station for American Roots Live 53 and can't wait to experience the excitement this next year will bring!

ROOTS REVIEW 51!

American Roots Live 51 was brimming with excitment last week. Maybe it was everyone's anticipation of ARL 52 - this week's one year anniversary celebration. Maybe it was because our friend, NYC firefighter, Brian Z was back on stage again. Maybe it was because guitar legend, Dave DiPietro was making his American Roots Live debut and smoking the house slow.

Maybe it was because Arlene Schar and Mimi Nowak sparkeled like diamonds or maybe it was Len De Piano, John Powers or JR Bradfield showing everybody how it's done with class, ability, humility and dedication.

OR just maybe it was that charbroiled 16oz steak with all the trimmings The Rail serves-up for just $9.95.

Whatever it was, we raised the bar again at American Roots Live 51 and we're looking forward to seeing all of you this week down at the station as we click past ARL 52 signaling one solid year of "open" roots rockin' fun.

It seems like just yesterday when I introduced our first co-hosts, Bassboards Blues Band with our friends Kate Weber and John Caruna

Roots Review 49 & 50 BY NASTY NED

I'm having so much fun hosting American Roots Live that I almost feel guilty. I ask myself, how can one person enjoy such satisfaction when there are so many other unhappy, discontented people in the world complaining, "I can’t get no…"?

Well, the answer is simple really. I'm surrounded by satisfying people - some of the most talented and dedicated musicians you’ll find anywhere. And damn nice people at that and they all come together to play and celebrate American Roots Music.

And where would we be without John Powers, JR Bradfield, Len Depiano and Mimi Nowak.

I didn’t set out to save the world with American Roots Live, just the music. And, as I soon realized, many others felt the same way and recognize American Roots Live as a viable entity. A noble cause. A great forum from which to play. To emote. To share. To bear one’s soul and to build their chops. Can I get an amen?

It really is the spirit of the people who come to American Roots Live open mic celebrations that make it work. And not just the musicians, but the listeners, too. Have you ever tried eating peanut butter without the jam? It’s like playing music with no audience or being in the audience with no music. A little hard to swallow. But fortunately, we have both at ARL.

And that’s why we all have so much fun at American Roots Live. If you have never joined the fun at one of our shows, you must put it on your grocery list of things to do. Please do join us. We’re having an abundance of good times and there is plenty to go around, besides, we want to share it with you.

Ian Wallace, drummer, songwriter, producer and engineer: born Bury, Lancashire 29 September 1946; twice married (two daughters); died Los Angeles 22 February 2007.

In a career stretching over 40 years, Ian Wallace played with the progressive rock group King Crimson and its 21st Century Schizoid Band spin-off as well as touring and recording with Bob Dylan, Jackson Browne, Tim Buckley, Don Henley, Alexis Korner, Alvin Lee, Steve Marriott, Graham Nash, Bonnie Raitt and Warren Zevon.

One of the drummers most in demand in the rock era, Wallace could play any style of music, from rockabilly to jazz, and demonstrated his versatility when appearing on over 100 albums by the likes of Badfinger, Billy Burnette, Larry Coryell, Rodney Crowell, Johnny Hallyday, David Lindley, Stevie Nicks, Roy Orbison, the Quireboys, the Traveling Wilburys and Ron Wood.

Born in Bury, Lancashire, in 1946, Wallace was bitten by the rock'n'roll bug at an early age and formed the Jaguars, a four-piece beat group, with friends while still at Bury Grammar School. They played gigs around Bury and came across the Warriors, a six-piece band from neighbouring Accrington led by one Johnnie Anderson - who went to front Yes as Jon Anderson - and his older brother Tony.

Wallace had passed his GCE exams and got a job as a clerk with the NHS but, when the Warriors lost their drummer just after signing a recording contract with Decca in April 1964, and asked him to join them and turn professional, he jumped at the chance. They recorded one single entitled "You Came Along" and played gigs up and down the country and had long residencies at clubs in Germany and Denmark. "Six sets a night, every night, and nine on weekends. This is where I truly learnt to play the drums," recalled Wallace, who also spent several months in Copenhagen with Big Sound, a soul group from Manchester working throughout Scandinavia.

By 1968, he was back in the UK with Big Sound and living in cramped circumstances in London. "Six of us living in one room in the same house as some of Yes. I actually did a gig with Yes when their drummer at the time got sick, and they offered me the gig but I turned it down," said Wallace, who would later precede that very drummer, Bill Bruford, behind the kit in King Crimson.

In the late Sixties, Wallace backed chart acts such as Sandie Shaw, the Marbles, Billy J. Kramer and Lou Christie and toured with the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band and Viv Stanshall's Big Grunt:

Viv promptly had a nervous breakdown so I jumped ship and joined Neil Innes' band the World. We did one album, Lucky Planet, and were gigging when Robert Fripp asked me to join King Crimson.

After releasing their stunning In the Court of the Crimson King début and playing 80 concerts in 1969, the original line-up of King Crimson had broken up and Fripp and the lyricist Pete Sinfield had struggled to maintain any sort of cohesion through the next two albums, In the Wake of Poseidon and Lizards. In fact, King Crimson hadn't played live again until Fripp and saxophonist Mel Collins drafted Wallace and singer Boz Burrell - who picked up a bass guitar and never looked back, later joining Bad Company - to form the fourth incarnation of the group, which débuted with four gigs at the Zoom Club in Frankfurt in April 1971.

The following month, they toured the UK, and played Hyde Park in September, before going to the United States on two separate occasions, though the near-dictatorial behaviour of Fripp almost forced the other three musicians to walk out in January 1972, just after the release of Islands, the only studio album they recorded.

Wallace, Collins and Burrell did stay on for another three months but the tension between them and the band's leader can clearly be heard on Earthbound, the live album drawn from tapes of the US concerts they played in February, March and April 1972, which were recorded from the mixing board on a portable Ampex stereo cassette deck the drummer had bought. With Sinfield treating the group's live sound through a VCS3 synthesiser, the distorted version of "21st Century Schizoid Man" in particular was a portent of grunge things to come, while Wallace's solo on "Groon" - processed via the VCS3 for effect - shows why Phil Collins would later name him as his favourite drummer.

"After the restraints were lifted whilst we continued to fulfil our contractual obligations," recalled Wallace,

Mel and I and Robert too, were able to fly off in all kinds of weird and wonderful directions, knowing that Boz wouldn't move, anchoring our base, allowing us to always be able to return to the One. That is an essential part of improvisation.

When Earthbound was eventually issued in June 1972, Wallace, Collins and Burrell had already joined Alexis Korner and Peter Thorup in Snape. For the next four years, the drummer freelanced with Korner, Alvin Lee, Labi Siffre, Streetwalkers and Steve Marriott's All Stars.

At the end of 1976, after finishing a US tour with Marriott, Wallace stayed on in Los Angeles to further his career. Told by Joan Baez's manager that Bob Dylan was auditioning drummers, he went along and got the gig, playing on the Street Legal album and touring with the singer-songwriter throughout 1978, an experience documented on the At Budokan live album issued the following year:

It was a very hedonistic time. Bob hadn't quite found religion, it was the year before all that went down and we all partied hard! Plus we had our own plane in the States, and our own train in Europe. First class all the way.

Wallace had a second spell backing Dylan in the early Nineties and also drummed on the Traveling Wilburys' hit single "Handle With Care" in 1988, an occasion he loved recalling:

Jeff Lynne called me one morning to ask if I was available to do a session. Seems that he, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison and George Harrison were all hanging out at Bob Dylan's house in Point Dume and had written a song to use as a B-side for a European single for George. It had a drum machine on it but it needed spicing up with some drum fills and could I go over that afternoon to Quincy Jones' studio to play said fills. Of course I said yes and did that exact thing, playing tom fills on the song, "Handle With Care". Mike Campbell was also there adding guitar parts. The only person that wasn't there was Dylan. When George took the finished song to Warner Brothers, they said it would be ridiculous to waste this as a B-side and how about doing more and putting an album out? And so the Traveling Wilburys were born.

I never did get paid for that session. At least,

in cash. But I had spent part of my honeymoon at George's place in Maui and I do have a Traveling Wilburys platinum album on my studio wall, so I think that's payment enough!

In the late Nineties, Wallace relocated to Nashville, basing himself there for several years, and becoming one of the most popular British expats in Music City, USA. Looking back on his time in the music industry, which included tours and sessions with David Lindley and El Rayo-X, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Don Henley (for three tours), Jackson Browne and Procol Harum, and an unusual engagement as one of several drummers performing at the World Cup USA 94 final at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Wallace reflected, "I think I've remained friends with just about everyone I've worked with."

He released his first solo album, Happiness With Minimal Side Effects, in 2003. That year, he replaced the drummer Michael Giles and joined the King Crimson alumni Mel Collins, Ian McDonald and Peter Giles, along with Jakko M. Jaksyk, in the 21st Century Schizoid Band.

A drummer with an unusual style since he was tall, left-handed and had long, powerful arms, Wallace was held in high esteem by everyone he worked with. Don Henley, in particular, told Modern Drummer magazine,

I like the way Ian plays. He plays simply, although he can get very complex. He can play jazz very well. He's one of the few drummers I know who doesn't rush. I just like his style. He's also very good at programming. He's a hell of a nice guy and a hell of a drummer.

Wallace loved cooking, keeping up with the results of Liverpool Football Club, and hanging out with other drummers such as Peter Erskine, Jim Keltner and Earl Palmer. When asked what was most difficult about playing so many different genres of music, Wallace said easily,

The ability to convey a musical idea with one note instead of a thousand. If you want something to be real, then it's all difficult unless you are in the "zone". And getting there is the hardest thing in the world because that's up to God.

What was so cool about the last time Brent performed with us is that he didn't want to go on stage early, opting to wait until a larger audience was assembled - I love that!

Back in April of '06 my brother from another mother, Mike Caruso, asked me if he could bring his 19 year old daughter to perform at American Roots Live saying she's really good and would like to sing in front of an audience - my answer was a no-brainer - yes, of course, I said. This is what American Roots Live is all about - involving young people with roots music.

Well, 19 year old Kelly Caruso came to the show with her dad and knocked us all out with her powerful, surprisingly disciplined voice signing some od-school R&B. Every body loved her and she kept coming back, quickly becoming a crowd favorite and, in the process; an American Roots Live All Star!

The rest is history.

We salute Kelly Caruso - now known as American Idol's Kelly Caruso - for passing three Idol auditions and hearing those coveted five words from Paula, Randy and Simon, "you're going to Hollywood, baby!".

American Roots Live 45 welcomed Kelly Caruso back to The Rail last Thursday night and once again she knocked us out! Come out and hear for yourself!

We now do two American Roots Live shows at The Rail in Bound Brook, NJ - one on Thursdays at 9pm and one on Sundays starting a little earlier at 7pm. If you haven't been to one of our ARL shows... what are you waiting for?

Thursday nights at American Roots Live at The Rail have been a blast. Lots of great music, awesome performances, lots of smiling faces, winning raffle ticket recpients and tons of fabulous food.

Ol' Nasty Ned is hurricane busy as usual - and now with production for American Roots TV in full swing (yes, we'll be on the air soon)- we're still playing catch up here.

Between ARL 43 and 44 we held a fun and very successful American Roots Live All Stars Benefit Concert for Harry Okie that raised $1,500 for him and his kids who lost everything when their home burned down just before this past Christmas - and the fund raising continues as Bobby Malavenda of Manville Music donated a guitar to be raffled off in hopes of raising even more money for Harry and kids.

The guitar is being signed by ARL All Stars and the raffle tickets can be had at every American Roots Live show - twice a week now - Thursdays at 9 and Sundays at 7 at The Rail as ARL is so much fun we now need two nights to enjoy it all.

Please stop in and join the all this fun and get in on the raffle. The ARL All Star autographed guitar will be awarded to one lucky winner at ARL 52, Sunday April 1st - that's our one year anniversary show. You must be in attendance to win.

Yes, I have some catching up to do. Sorry for the delayed Roots Review - and, that I'm combining 41 and 42 - but it gets that way sometime.

With juggling the American Roots Live Shows and all that goes with it, my duties for Elmore Magazine and arranging the Blaze Benefit for Harry Okie, I've been running in wet sand.

I hope you can join us Sunday, January 28 for the American Roots Live All-Stars Blaze Benefit Concert for Harry Okie starting at 1pm and running 'til midnight. Doors open 12N at The Rail.

15 ecclectic All Star acts will perform in an all-day benefit concert to raise money for Harry Zierdt and his kids who lost everything when their home burned down just before Christmas 'o6. Do you want to know what really makes an American Roots Live open mic show so special? It's the high caliber abilities of the musicians on stage, their lack of ego, their respect for each other, their willingness to accomodate and help each other for the sake of the show. And it's their professionalism and certain dedication to a cause.

Saving American Roots Music Live!

John Powers in New Jersey and Billy K, Chip Bush and Ed Moore in Pennsylvania get the job done week after week because of their dedication and because they love doing it and because they want to save the music.

We save the soundtrack of our culture by celebrating it each week and by bringing it to young people. Inviting young people on stage to play with the pros is an experience they'll never forget. And each young one more than holds their own each week. It's exciting to see them lighting it up and getting a feel for the stage. All of them, nine years old, 14 years old or 17 years old are wonderful.

This week American Roots Live 40 welcomed Sarah MacCombie, a talenetd 19 year old bass player whose interests are playing and listening to jazz and blues. She kept it in the pocket for guitarist Bobby Malavenda with Ed Pampani on drums. Sarah, by the way is Bobby's student at Manville Music.

What was cool was seeing Johnny Charles stay on stage for two songs with the youngster after his own incredible set with JR Bradfield to show his special interest.

I'm so proud of all of the musicians who step onto our stage each week.

Audiences at American Roots Live 40 at the Bluetone Cafe in Easton, PA and the Rail in Bound Brook, NJ were treated to performances by a red-hot Johnny Charles in both venues, Sonny Young, Arlene Schar, Vern Mobley, Doc Z, Joe Matthews, Michael Lopresti. Bones Sandford in both venues, Laurie Vosburg, Nick T, Keith Pagam Jr., Evan Wismer Jr., Goerge Kokokous and the fabulous Rob Fraser on bass from Mike Dugan and Blues Mission. Also thanks to Don Mickel.

There was John Powers, Pampani, a smokin' Jimmy Somma, Gary Amarossa, Screamin' Mimi Nowak, stump pickin' Bradfield who also played bass for who ever requested him, Bob DelRosso, young Sarah, Randy Marinelli, Carlo, Gavin Lawrence, Malavenda and that steady poppin' south-paw, Walter Foot. Also thanks to Rotten Robert and Dave Becker.

There really is no show like American Roots Live anywhere.

And fortunately, for all who come to American Roots Live, the food is absolutely great, and affordable - at both showplaces.

The kids are alright!

Last Thursday's American Roots Live was the epitome of what our movement is all about... the kids. In a packed Bluetone Cafe full of musician's and fans of all ages American Roots music was the focus from blues to country to rock to free style jam.

Billy & K the Pocono Players laid down a solid set of roots based classic rock then backed Carl Van Camp who tore through some Elvis, Johnny Cash and George Jones (pic). Fans young and old soaked in the sweet sounds of yesterday.

Billy K was joined on stage by his 14 year old son Dolan Kutzman on Drums and 17 year old friend Tim Beery on Bass. Nick T on guitar and vocals played with nine year old Brent Meyers who took center stage this week playing his own strat in front of Ed Moore on drums and Chip Bush playing bass.

Nancy Colletti aired out her amazing voice while her children listened and 21 year old Michael Lopresti rocked electric with Matt Roman. Roman then free styled quite interestingly with Billy K - deep.

Other stand outs were Clay Reilly on trumpet. Kevin Tracy , keys, Jaimo Flynn on drums, Joe Matthews, bass Brian Becklin, guitar Sonny Young, guitar & vocals, some guy named Ned blowin' harp and with Arlene Schar in the house, many others.

Thanks to Elmore Magazine and publisher Suzanne Cadgene for their continued support of the effort, the Bluetone's Joe Karam, Doug, Aaron, Katelyn and Christine and thanks to all the parents for recognizing that American Roots Live Shows are a good place to bring the kids to grab a piece of history and expand a mind. For learning to play their instruments better on stage - which is an ultimate form of artistic expression - builds confidence in young people.

The Bluetone Cafe in Easton, PA and the Rail in Bound Brook, NJ have had a lot of incredible musicians grace the two stages since we've started American Roots Live.Our taleneted and accomodating co-hosts John Powers in New Jersey and Billy K in Rennsylvania, make American Roots Live the place to be every Thursday and Sunday nights where the roots rock like no place else.Our celebration of 20th century American roots music continues to draw new musicians and fans alike.

Parents are learning that ARL is a great place to introduce their kids to the music and for this we are pleased.Last Thusday at the Bluetone we had nine year old Brent Myers on stage playing Billy K's stratocaster along side Nick T with Ed Moore on Drums and Chip Bush on bass. The kid was good and had us all satisfied that this is in fact what ARL is all about - bringing it to the kids.Both venues have become destination rooms for musicians of all ages and all talent levels from amature to pro. We've been fortunate enough to jam with Brian Becklin, Doc Z, Johanna, Michael Lopresti, Jim Ruffi, John Kasper, Bernie Brauswetter, Vern Mobley, Kieth McGonagal, Johnny Charles, Kim Bierny, Robert Zee, JR Bradfield, Len DePiano, Mimi Nowak, Bob Del Rosso, Jaimo Flynn, Bones Sanford, Lorrie Millheim, Alan G, WDIY's Stew Brodian, Keith Pagam Sr., and Keith Pagam Jr., Craig Thatcher and more.We thank all the musicians who participate - all fans who come out to support the cause and our venue owners and managaement.

We thank our volunteers and photographers and hope to see you all again soon.Keep in mind that Christmas Eve and New Years Eve have pre-empted the Sunday shows at the Rail but we will be back in full swing in Bound Brook starting again on January 7th. American Roots Live 36 was tons of fun - both at the Bluetone Cafe in Easton, PA on Thursday night and our re-opening at The Rail in Bound Brook, NJ on Sunday night.

I would like to thank our ARL headlining co hosts, John Powers (left) and Billy K (right) for their undying dedication to our cause - and for all their hard work.

I feel a need today to post our mission statement, so please read it and then check-out the American Roots Live 36 performers line up below. Thanks to all who participated in both venues. You were awesome and we hope to see and hear you again soon.

American Roots Live Mission Statement:

American Roots Live is a movement whose purpose is to promote and preserve the heartbeat of a culture - American roots music - Blues, Jazz, Rock, Country, Rock & Roll, Bluegrass, R&B, Soul, Gospel and all other hybrid rhythms and rhymes in-between.

This music, of a time period running roughly from the 1890's through the mid 1970's, makes up the genre our movement recognizes as American roots music. American Roots Live's purpose also includes reviving a "live performance scene" open to all who want to listen or play.

We are dedicated to sharing, encouraging and inspiring children and young adults to recognize and appreciate American roots music as the birthplace of today's music by getting involved at any of a growing number of American Roots Live open-mic locations - to play along-side a professional musician or just to come and listen.

The impetus behind the movement is significant as American roots music is no longer played on mainstream radio or showcased by mainstream media, forcing it into a narrowing niche away from mainstream American audiences.

As exampled by music venues originally opened as 'blues" or "roots" rooms now finding other forms of entertainment to pay their bills.

Disturbingly, this has become the norm for many venues around the country.

It is therefore the mission of American Roots Live to promote and preserve our American Roots heritage through live performance and all other media available, including television, radio, print, recorded media, internet and pod-cast so that grandchildren will pass it on to their grandchildren and so forth... and for this vital cause, we ask for your interest and support - musician and fan alike.

American Roots Live 35 at the Bluetone kicked off to the strains of Jimi Hendrix's recording of the national anthem - then took off for the stars.

Hosted by Billy K & the Pocono Players, ARL 35 kissed the sky.

First up was our young friend, solo performer, Michael Lopresti with his wing and a prayer improvisational original songs. Then Carl Van Camp, backed by Billy K, Ed Moore and Chip Bush, brought down the house with his vocal performance of "Folsom Prison Blues", "Little Sister", "It's Now or Never", "Blue Christmas" and then, encouraged by an enthusiastic audience, came back to encore with "Good Hearted Woman."

Chris on harp and Brian from Big Daddy & the Wildcats playing guitar then joined the headliners on stage with Brian commencing to tear things up, leaving Bluetone owner, Joe Karam to comment, "I really like that young guy on guitar."

Indeed, Brian is one hellova guitar slinger.

Then it was Sonny Young's turn to raise the bar with his guitar and vocals. He did so with Arlene Schar on violin, our old friend James Supra on harp and vocals, Chip Bush playing bass and the ever effervescent Jaimo Flynn tappin' the tubs - a truly inspiring performance!

Chris & Dave took the stage and delivered a tasty, dueling guitars performance accompanied by James Supra's superbly soulful harmonica. Also in the mix was our man Vern Mobley wailing on drums with Don playing bass.

Next it was Roman's turn to tear it up with his guitar and vocals and army of players consisting of Keith on guitar, Don on bass and a special guest appearance by Dave Hollingsworth from Todd Wolfe's Band playing drums.

Nick T shined with his guitar on Neil Young's "Down by the River" with Ed Moore and Chip Bush along for the ride and then Billy K & the Pocono Players closed it out just the way they started - with a firey, crowd pleasing performance.

Lots of new faces in the house this night and especially encouraging was all the young people in the room diggin' them roots. Thanks to Carol and Sue who vow to bring their friends to ARL 36, to James Flynn's posse and to Carl Van Camp's entire entourage.

It was a great night for sure and my very special thanks go out to a very special guy and talented musician; one Billy K. Thanks for the report Billy - my only regret is that I was not able to attend ARL 34 at the Bluetone in Easton as I was in NYC at a "must attend" Eagle Rock Entertainment/Elmore Magazine Gala.

But, I really can't complain because I had the distinct honor of jamming with Mark Naftalin
from the original Paul Butterfield Blues Band and Jeff Simon of George Thorogood & the Destroyers, Jake Walker, Collin John and also on the same stage that night; Chaz DePaolo, Roger Earl from Foghat and the legendary Nick Gravanities, another original member of Butterfield's band who actually wrote the song "Born in Chicago".

Oh what a night! I'll look for you all soon and please take note that ARL is no longer at Crossroads in Garwood, but very happy to announce our return to The Rail in Bound Brook, NJ every Sunday night at 7pm starting December 10.

My last week in Arizona ended on a high note when HoneyBoy Dupree and I joined Paris James, Mikel Lander, Jack Straw, Arizona Blues Hall of Famer, Hans Olsen and others at the Robert Johnson Blues Foundation Benefit Concert at the Rhythm Room in Phoenix, hosted by Paris.

A great time was had by all who packed the room on a Sunday night to hear great roots music from some of Arizona's hottest performers and one snowbird.

Earlier in the week - Wednesday, night before Thanksgiving - Dupree and I celebrated American Roots Live 34 with some awesome musicians at hot-spot, Bobby C's Jazz Lounge and Grille downtown in the shadow of the Arizona Diamondback's baseball stadium.

I blew some harp, but man there were some great pro performances by Paris James (pic) playing guitar and singing his heart out, Dupree on bass, Adam Clark; drums, the renowned Raul Yanez on Hammond B3 organ and piano. Raul Yanez has serious chops and his music deep, deep soul. Javier Yanez on bass, Tony Valensuela; congas, Duwall Davis; drums, 18 year old, Ryan Dingess; keys and other players and rooters from all around the country.

Everyone had a great time and left for the their holidays with an Elmore Magazine and the spirit of the music in their hearts. Many thanks to Bobby and Joy Clayton for their interest and genuine hospitality.

Then it was off to Nogales, Mexico Thursday for a Thanksgiving dinner of cheese enchiladas, beans and rice.

But it all started Sunday, the 26th, when HoneyBoy Dupree & the Smokehouse Players walked away with another Arizona Music Award for their knock-out performance at the Rhythm Room. Dupree was a crowd favorite that day and I had a blast joining him on stage to do a little blowin' and shoutin' of my own.

There where many stand-out performances including (now on his way to Memphis) Mikel Lander, a 25 year old, lefty guitarist and singer who does a great, original Robert Johnson thing, Arizona Blues Hall of Famer, Tommy Dukes, a 13 year old guitar phenom named Kevin KC Blues and many more. KC is sure to carry the roots torch into the future for generations to come. This was the Phoenix Blues Society's biggest day of the year.

Our many thanks to the Rhythm Room's Bob Corritore (pic), harp player, producer, radio show host and blues historian - for his interest, generousity, hospitality and spirit.

Thanks to Rich Brydle, manager of Cold Shot & the Hurricane Horns - another of Zona's hottest acts - for his energy and vision - and special thanks to Paris' manager, Evan "Arizona" Mills for his humor and for spreading the word.

All in all, whether it was sizzlin' on stage or in the 90 degree dessert sun, my time in Arizona was hot, hot, hot!

As I'm writing this roots review, HoneyBoy Dupree is driving us through Organ Pipe Cactus National Park on our way to Mexico to buy cheap cigarettes and duty free apple juice concentrate. The scenery is spiritually inspiring and beautiful - a 360 degree postcard. BTW - Dupree says hello y'all!

Well last week's American Roots Live was another fun packed week of incredible music by some incredibly talented musicians!

ARL 33 at Crossroads in Garwood, NJ featured a solid line up of serious roots-passionate players including headliner and co-host John Powers, who, joined by JR Bradfield on banjo, put in a stellar set of his infectious, crowd pleasing originals.

Many thanks go to EJ Rice, Josh Gebhardt, Robert Zee, Bones Sanford, Mimi Nowak, Len Depiano, the young and awesomely talented Steve McIntyre, Jim Angelica, Mike Maino, Jeff Miller and Rob "Rock" Bianco among others - yes, even me, now that I'm wearing my new kryptonite belt!

We all appreciate the passion, determination and good will of Win, who has attended all 33 ARL shows since we started in April. Win, a talented photographer, brings his best 11 X 8 1/2 color prints and makes gifts of them to the deserving musicians he appreciates so much - well... we appreciate Win and thank him for his generosity, support and enthusiasm.

In Easton at the Bluetone Cafe Thursday, Billy K & the Pocono Players; Ed Moore and Chip Bush turned up the heat. There were dynamite performances by the Bigsbies, hot as fire picking by Doc Z and Roman, with Vern Mobley on Drums, Bones on bass, Paul Berger, the spirit of Jaimo Flynn, and our young improvisational friend, Michael Lopresti who all made for a great night of music in Easton.

I got home that night after the Bluetone at about 3:30 AM - and given the fact that I was being picked up at 6:30AM for an early flight out of Newark to Phoenix - and still hadn't pack, I decided to pull an all-nighter.

I caught a couple of Z's in the air and landed in Phoenix 2 hours before showtime at the Dessert Ridge Market Place in Scottsdale, AZ with HoneyBoy Dupree & the Smoke House Players. What a cool place. Dessert Ridge is a beautiful open-air mall - think Times Square with palms trees and large concert stage in the middle.

We performed for thousands of appreciative music listeners. The Dessert Ridge has over 30 restaurants mostly situated around the stage area with diners and partiers sitting in individual bistro style outdoor dining areas - with plenty of seats, tables and kiosks in a common area in front of the stage.

Most satisfying was the number of children crowding the stage dancing and reaching up to touch HoneyBoy's bass as he played.

No doubt our American Roots message was delivered and one lucky fan, Dave, a bass player from Chicago, took home the grand prize package of a HoneyBoy Dupree & the Smoke House Player's CD, an autographed picture of me and Dupree performing together at our TV shoot during his Jersey visit in August and the current issue of Elmore Magazine and Elmore CD sampler.

The Phoenix metro area is a great music place and I'll tell you more about my trip when I get back and in Roots Review 34.

We wish Ed Pampani a speedy recoverey and hope to have him back with us soon.

We kicked off with new comer, Michael Lopresti, who performed solo with acoustic guitar singing and improvising some cool original songs.Stand-out performances by Johnny Charles, Bernie BB Brauswetter, Jaimo Flynn, Arne Englund, Vern Mobley, Dan Balde, George Kokolis, Sonny Young, Arlene Schar, Roman, Dave Becker, Leo, Billy K, Ed Moore, Chip Bush and Mike P & the Joint Chiefs of Funk made for an electrifying evening in old Easton town.It was a memorable evening for one 9 year old student guitarist, who (accompanied by his father of course), sat fixed on the stellar, pro-guitar performances of Johnny Charles, Arne Englund, Billy K and Sonny Young. We look forward to this young man bringing his guitar to American Roots Live in the near future to perform with us.

John Powers & friends, EJ Rice and Josh Gebhardt headlined Wednesday at Crossroads with stand out performances by Mimi Nowak, Bob Del Rosso, JR Bradfield, The Doctor, Ed Pampani, Bones Sanford, Robert Z, Walter Foot, more.They reminded us all why our American Roots Movement is so significant and why each American Roots Live show so important.I hope to see you at American Roots Live 33 at Crossroads and the Bluetone Cafe on the 15th and 16th then ask you to look for Roots Review 33 to be posted from Phoenix, AZ during Thanksgiving week as American Roots Live and Elmore Magazine will join our good friend HoneyBoy Dupree on stage at Dessert Ridge Market Place on the 17th and the Rhythm Room on the 19th and 26th - these are two of the hottest Blues venues in the Valley. HoneyBoy Dupree & the Smokehouse Players, already 2002 IBC Award Winners, go for the 2006 IBC crown again on the 19th and we'll both be performing with Paris James and others at the Rhythm Room on the 26th. I'll let you know all about it in Roots Review 34 then I'll look to see you see you at ARL 35 the week after the holiday.
