American Roots Live 26 down at the Crossroads Wednesday night.

Rob Paparozzi, harp player, blues rapper, Broadway performer, front man of the "Original Blues Brothers Band" with Steve Cropper, Matt Murphy and Lou Marini, took time this week from his current gig; fronting the legendary "Blood, Sweat and Tears", to play Crossroads in Garwood - Friday with his band, The Hudson River Rats featuring Bernard Purdie, and Wednesday night with us at American Roots Live.

Accompanied by Ron Poppa on guitar, John Powers on drums and Robert Z playing bass, Rob Paparozzi honked and hollered through three hot steppers including Sonny Boy's "Pontiac" then, with harmonica and mic-in-hand, jumped behind the piano to rock a right-handed solo, thrilling an already excited crowd.

We also welcomed two new acts at American Roots Live 26; a sparky, talented young, lefty-guitar slinger named Steve McIntyre
We were also thankful to hear one of our favorite Aerican Roots All Stars, Bernie BB Brauswetter buzz through a couple of funky stingers and pleasure us while his guitar weeped "c'mon people now, smile on your brother, everybody get together try and love one another right now" with Copa playing bass and Rob on drums.

Other memorable performances by Josh Gebhardt, Ed Pampani, Bones Sanford, Screamin' Mimi Nowak, Len DePiano, Ray DiGiovanni, Walter Foot, Terry Hunter and Jimmy and more.

When Slim Harpo sang "Where the music's hot," he could have been signing about American Roots Live at the Bluetone Cafe in Easton, PA Thursday night, 'cause, man we were cookin' there, too.

With rain pouring down in sheets and the weatherman screaming about tornados, we had more players in the house than non-players. In fact our audience was about 98% musicians proving that an artist's passion can't be cooled by threats of a funnel cloud. Even with the two birthday parties in the room, there was more heat coming out of the Bluetone Thursday night than just candles burning on cakes!

We were honored to accommodate renowned Philly jazz trumpeter - Ortlieb's own - Roger Prieto, who brought us all back to ol' New Orleans with his muted horn then brass balled serenading.

With a red hot band consisting of AR All Stars Johnny Charles on guitar and Gene Downin on bass, and a little harmonica from my barstool, Roger Prieto smiled and shined while mixing it up with Sonny Young and Chris Hedges, also on guitars (Chris playing slide) and Brian "Bam Bam" Bridge on drums.

Many thanks to one jammin' Jaimo Flynn for his remarkable performance on drums and supreme efforts in guesthosting American Roots Live 26 with Johnny Charles, myself and the steady rollin' bass of Stroudsburg, PA's Chip Bush. Also great performances by Billy K, Vern Mobley of Fusion Jazz Trio, Keith and more.

American Roots Live 26 marked 6 months of constant live celebration of the greatest music in the world - American Roots Music. Many thanks to our venues, ownership and staff, all of the wonderful, talented and dedicated musicians and singers, our sponsors and supporters, and our American Roots volunteers and ambassadors.

The roots of American music run deep.

When you look at the influential music makers of the 20th century as each an individual root making-up a collectively massive root system - like that of a 100 year old tree - you begin to realize the complexity of our musical heritage.

Whether we're talking acoustic or electric, Pop, Rock, Country or Jazz, Blues, Be-Bop, Swing, R & B, Rap or Soul - Rock n' Roll, Bluegrass, Gospel, Funk, Folk or Holler - all are the roots of the music being made today.

When W.C. Handy wrote "Memphis Blues" in 1909, he had no idea he was becoming great- great grandfather of a baby to be named Rock n' Roll, nor did Robert Johnson realize as he recorded "Crossroads Blues" in 1936 in a San Antonio hotel room, that he was to be great grandfather of a music called Rock.

W.C. Handy and Robert Johnson never imagined their music would inspire thousands of legendary mothers and fathers of the Blues whose own music would go on to lead millions of sons and daughters to interpret and reshape a sound the world would soon recognize simply as American Music.

When Muddy Waters recorded "Rolling Stone" in 1950 he didn't know his lingo would serve to identify a cultural movement who would come to know the phrase as the name of its "most heralded Rock band" and the most widely read music-magazine that would help define an era.

My intention with Roots Reviews now, is to further exemplify the importance of preserving 20th century American Roots Music by profiling some of its ancestors, while still talking about the performances and contributions of the current music makers who perform with us each week at American Roots Live on stage at Crossroads in Garwood, NJ and the Bluetone in Easton, PA.

Like 19 year old Kelly Caruso who held a crowded house in her young hands with pure presence, poise and powerful-pipes belting out the classics "Got my mojo working," "Hit the road Jack" and her hot knife on butter rendition of Etta James' "At last" Wednesday night at Crossroads.

Guitar wizard, Bernie BB Brauswetter, spirited and funny, engaged the audience in conversation while putting on a guitar clinic with another accomplished six stringer, Ron Poppa at his side. There was the rockin' unsafe sax of Walter Bordinaro, the chain smoking, heartfelt guitar solos of Jeff Page - while he and JR Bradfield put in extra effort covering for the illin' John Powers to ensure the smoothness and rhythm American Roots Live shows are known for.

Other great performances Wednesday night at Crossroads came from JR Bradfield, Mike Caruso, Bones Sanford, Robert Z, Ed Pampani, Pete Lutz, Gabe Perry, Bob Del Rosso, Bobby Malavenda, Mimi Nowak, Dave Mager and others.

At the Bluetone on Thursday Arne Englund and his gold-top Les Paul tore it up with a vengeance burning through rockin' Muddy Waters' classics with Big Boy Kenny Nerbak on bass solid as a rock, myself blowin' and shoutin' and Andy McGregor on drums.

Later Arne and that gold-top mesmerized the audience with the Allman Brother's "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" in an improvised duet with Arlen Schar who emulated the original, recognizable guitar parts on her violin - Jamie Flynn playing drums like Jamo and Butch Trucks at the same time.

Other great performances at the Bluetone came from Billy K, Chip Bush, Ed Moore, Doc Z, Randall Smith, Paul Berger, B Moore Ezz, Leo, Keith, Don H, Ross T, Vern Mobley and others.

Boz Burrell Bassist for King Crimson and Bad Company dead at age 60

When I was writing my biography of King Crimson back in 1999, Id been pleasantly surprised by how many of the ex-members were keen to talk to me about their time with the band. Even the couple who at first were reluctant eventually agreed to talk. The one person who declined to talk was Boz Burrell.

He was always polite when I rang him at his home. Sometimes his wife would answer and she would say Oh hang on, he s just out playing some golf. I will just go and get him. My head would immediately fill with the image of Boz in those Pringle sweaters and the ludicrous slacks. It somehow did not fit the image of the hard-drinking, hard rocking blues and jazz loving singer who had joined Crimson as a brief stopping point on his way to global success with Bad Company.

I think I spoke to him three times in total. On each occasion he d politely enquire how the book was progressing. Sometimes I would tell a little of what someone had said, hoping it would spur him into a response but Boz was too seasoned a pro to be caught like that. Instead he would offer neutral comments; We ll it might have been like that but, you know I can not really remember was about as far as he would be drawn.

Only on once or twice did he offer an opinion but it was strictly off the record and most definitely non-attributable. He was always struck me as affable and courteous and I felt sure that if I kept up with the calls, he would have relented and talked on the record.

Everyone from Crimson who had an association with Boz that I talked to Dik Fraser, Robert Fripp, Peter Sinfield, Mel Collins and Ian Wallace all had good things to say about him. Both Mel and Ian were particular defensive about their ex-band mate, feeling he had been unfairly maligned by certain sections of the Crimson fanbase.

It was not until the release of material through the King Crimson Collectors Club and more recently though DGMLive, that the reputation of the Boz era KC was rehabilitated, from being dismissed as a mere jam-band, and now exonerated as a group with its own distinctive identity. Certainly my own opinion of the group received a 360° turn-around after hearing the first four gigs the band played at the Zoom Club in April 1971.

Once Crimson toured the UK they somehow lost the sense of danger and adventure which is such a vital part of those Zoom Club recordings, hampered as they were by the need to bring what was for them, the ill fitting material of the previous incarnation, to the punters who were eager to hear the Court material played live.

Unfortunately, I never saw Boz with Crimson, having missed them at Newcastles City Hall by a matter of days. There was a compensation of sorts when Bad Company played the same venue on their first UK tour a few years later.

I think we watched Boz the whole night in his red leather rock god trousers, secretly hoping that Bad Company would break into a Crimson tune. Of course, given Bozs antipathy to that part of his career, it was never going to happen. Even though we knew it deep down, we held out hope until the end of the show. "Ladies of the Road" from Islands would have been ideal but of course it was not to be.

I heard about Bozs death from Jakko, who had heard the news himself from Peter Sinfield. I know Jakko was a huge fan of the Islands line up with Bozs version of the title track being one of his favourites.

Details were sketchy. Nobody quite knew what was going on. We thought at first that Boz was in Edinburgh with Tam White. I rang the news desk of The Scotsman newspaper but they had heard nothing. I checked out the local radio station but they knew zilch.

After contacting Tam Whites agent, I eventually spoke to guitarist Neil Warden who played with Boz and Tam in The Groove Connection. Neil clarified and confirmed the sad details.


Tam was visiting Boz at his place in Spain. They were getting ready to go out. Boz had just picked up a guitar to play, sat back and died there and then in the chair, killed (it seems likely) by a massive heart attack.

As the DGM HQ team hastily prepared a tribute page to Boz, I thought it was appropriate that David and Alex had chosen an alternative mix of "Ladies of the Road" as Bozs last encore with Crimson.

Man, did these cats and kittens come to play!

...and so did the Allentown Morning Call when American Roots Live tapped the passions of more great musicians in Pennsylvania, opening a SECOND home in a second state at the Bluetone Cafe in Easton this past Thursday night, giving us 2 big American Roots Live open-mic celebrations every week.

The Allentown Morning Call, sending a reporter and photographer, considered our arrival in Easton significant enough to make the event their entertainment- section feature story on September 30th.

Solid performances at The Bluetone by John Powers, EJ Rice, Johnny Charles, Lori V, Sonny Young, Billy K, Chip Bush, Jamo Flynn, Brian Bridge of Dyer Weed, Brad Sicotte, Arne Englund, JR Bradfield, Gary Rivenson of Philadelphia Funk Authority, Gene Downin from the Noo Dogs, and others made for a memorable night of LIVE music.

Opening night of American Roots Live in our new home was nothing short of spectacular! Crossroads, down in Garwood could have been where two dirt roads meet in Clarksdale, Mississippi. Not that all performances in Garwood Wednesday night were the blues, but they definitely where real. They were real and honest, rootsy and enthusiastic - and for me - that's as good as music gets.

Our thanks to, and appreciation of, one Mr. John Powers continues to grow and multiply as American Roots Live gains more and more momentum each week because of his dedication and hard work.

John Powers, an amazingly talented songwriter and guitarist - supported by unique vocal abilities, is in my opinion the future of American music. And he is the epitome of what our movement is all about. John Powers is a young man who "gets it" - and now he wants to give it back. So do yourself a favor and come to American Roots Live to see and hear what he is all about. Joe Taino did.

I'll open with thank you. Thank you to all of the people who have made a difference in our American Roots Movement. From the amazing musicians, to the volunteers and supporters, those who spread the word, the thousands of music fans who have come to enjoy the music, make donations to the band and win gifts and prizes - to all of those who embrace the cause of preserving American Roots Music - and certainly the venue owners, bookers, cooks and bartenders.

American Roots would like to thank Zupko's Tavern Theater, in particular Rich Zupko for having vision and giving us the opportunity to continue to present American Roots Live without interruption. Thanks to Lynn, Nordy, Jeff, Nick, Melissa, Dave and Jane. We'll miss you as we move and expand American Roots Live to every Wednesday night at Crossroads in Garwood, NJ beginning September 6 and every Thursday night at the Bluetone Cafe in Easton, PA beginning September 14.

Crossroads is perhaps the coolest blues and roots club in north Jersey located at 78 North Ave. Crossroads has an awesome house sound system, large stage and full concert lighting. Lee and Ronnie share the Roots Revival vision too and we're proud to be associated with them.

The Bluetone Cafe, rated the #1 blues and roots room in the Lehigh Valley is run by one of the nicest men in the business, and a real music fan. Joe has the vision, too. And both venues are destination rooms for the finest musicians in the area.

We had a blast on our last night at Zupko's, though. American Roots Live 22 introduced more fantastic new acts, namely the talented soloists Ron Dill and Maureen Gallagher and the frolicking, New Orleans style trio, This Old House. What a blast they were.

With John Powers guest hosting, The Wiliamzboy heated things up right out of the box and we were off and running - and I probably played and sang more at 22 than any other Roots Live I can remember - with John Powers and Josh Gephardt, Johnny Charles, Alan Rogoff, Greg Stier and Greg Louganis, then Arne Englund, Len DePiano and JR Bradfield. Standout performances by all of the above and including Kate Weber and Bassboards with John Caruana, Dr. Greg, Brad Sicotte, Mark Weber and Bones Sanford. We heard Bernie Brauswetter, Robert, Ed Pampani, Chaz, Arlene Schar, Bill Simmons, Paul Daloia, Ray Scro and more - it was a blast!

American Roots Live 21 was very special in that we introduced yet another new act, American Halo, who are an all girl band playing all original music.


Well, our temporary arrangement at Zupko's Tavern Theater has come to and end with one more Tuesday show to go. We are happy to announce that on Wednesday, September 6, American Roots Live will open in it's new home at Crossroads in Garwood, NJ and run every Wednesday night there after. Crossroads not only has 5 star dining and great ambience but is known as a destination room for musicians. A real "A" venue with a large stage, concert lighting and a great house sound system. We thank Lee and Ronni from Crossroads for their cooperation and their vision - we are all very excited.

American Roots Live 20 was memorable as we raised the bar again last night introducing a talented newcomer, The Wiliamzboy who played acoustic guitar and harmonica, showed lots of heart and delivered an enthusiastic solo performance of significant, original songs.

Also, HoneyBoy Dupree, ever the crowd pleaser, played his last night with us for a while. We were fortunate to have Arizona's favorite bluesman on our American Roots Live stage three times during his swing through Jersey including the live TV shoot Saturday past. We're sad to see him go but find comfort knowing he'll return again soon... and with Big Mac Mason.

46 musicians signed up to participate in American Roots 15, and though I'm blown away by that - both honored and elated - I'm sorry to say that only 42 musicians actually got up to play with some having to leave before their turns came up. To those players I say; "come on back y'all - let's try to slot you earlier next time".

Syd Barrett, Founder of Pink Floyd, Dies he was 60years old

LONDON Jul 11, 2006 (AP)— Syd Barrett, the troubled genius who co-founded Pink Floyd but spent his last years in reclusive anonymity, has died, a spokeswoman for the band said Tuesday. He was 60.

The spokeswoman who declined to give her name until the band made an official announcement confirmed media reports that he had died. She said Barrett died several days ago, but she did not disclose the cause of death. Barrett had suffered from diabetes for many years.

AMERICAN ROOTS REVIEW 14 BY NASTY NED

I am more and more amazed each and every week at the momentum being gained by our American Roots movement. I am also blown away by the passion and supreme contribution of John Powers & the Arturos and the sincerity of others who have stepped forward to volunteer where ever needed and I am continuously humbled by those who simply say, "thank you," or "this American Roots thing is so much fun", or "I can't wait for Thursday nights to get here."

I must also say that the musicians who show up to play just for the fun of it - young or old - veteran or beginner - have given me and Powers and the rest of us so much joy that I find it hard to put into words sometimes. There really is no other show like our American Roots celebration anywhere!

Week after week I am honored to play with some of the most incredibly talented and well know musicians on the circuit and am continuously blown away by the sweet, awesome, powerful and soulful sounds coming from our stage.

I am happy to say that American Roots is expanding into Easton, PA in September at the Bluetone Cafe - the Lehigh Valley's #1 Blues and Roots club - and soon there after expanding into New York State. Yes, there will be three American Roots open mic celebrations each week; one in New Jersey, one in Pennsylvania and one in New York - and this also comes with plans to bring special monthly shows: The American Roots All Stars to places like San Juan, Puerto Rico where our American Roots Ambassador Duane Chez will play the lead role and into places like Pheonix, Arizona where AmRoots Ambassador Honey Boy Dupree is already hard at work behind the scenes.

Happy Birthday AmericaAmerican Roots 13 was a rousing success. We had an eclectic group of top notch musicians sharing in the fun from JR Bradfield's Star Spangled Banner to his pre war finger picking blues to the electric blues of John Powers with EJ on Drums, Mike Caruso on Bass and Jeff Page on guitar - they really put it down - to the American Roots Sellers string band (sans a drummer)featuring Andy B from the VooDUDEs and Marco Dulce of Night Train. Man they really laid down some very refreshing country folk stylings complete with fiddle, mandoline and four part harmonies. Then it was Nasty Ned and Michael Krizan playing their electric brand of post war blues and then; the roof was blown off by Kelly Caruso backed by her father Mike on bass, Johnny Charles, Jeff Page on Guitar and Alan Rogoff on keys.This was certainly the night of the divas as we heard Kelly Caruso, Lori V and Kate weber singing their tails of. It was also the night of the guitar wizards, including John Powers, Jeff Page, Johhny Charles, Michael Krizan and others.Mentions and thanks have to go to all the awesome players - forty all total - including Jamo Flynn, Jake Jar el, Walter Foot, Ed Pampani(a pleasant symmetry), Michael Arthurs, Snakeman Runyun, Alan Rogoff, Billy K, Tom Plotkin, Eric Plotkin, Liz Moody, Rotton Robert, Bones Sanders, Gavin Lawrence, Ron Michaels nad Wayne Walcot on trunpet and trombone and many, many more.We had players from as far away as the hills of Pennsylvania to th ecaverns of New York City. What can I say? The first Ellery's Saturdays of Summer Open Mic Night was awesome!!! The night was full of all kinds of great music - from Indy acoustic rock to blues to classic rock. We even had Ellery's regular, Johnny C, get up and do a slammin' version of Lee Roy Brown! Paul N. played a mean bass along with JR Bradfield on guitar and Jeff K on drums. When Mike Masucci came up to play keys, all bets were off! They did an amazing medly of songs that had everyone singing along Local acoustic duo, Jessica and Milan stunned the entire bar with their powerful originals - we hope to see them again soon. Subject to Change made short work of some Bob Segar, Black Crowes, and Tina Turner, with Ed P and Brad backing them up on drums.
Many thanks to Ed Pampani and The BassBoards, who graciously lugged all of their equipment to the bar and allowed everyone to jam on it. They did a great job backing up anyone that wanted to play! Thanks also to my hubby, Mark Weber, for backing me up on some acoustic stuff and loaning out his amp
Many, many thanks to Angela and Justin, the bartenders for the evening, and to John Ellery, for taking the chance on a Saturday open mic night. We gave away some cool hats, T-shirts, and other goodies. Every Saturday, we'll be raffling off everything from T-shirts to tickets. You will just have to come to find out!

American Roots 9 was another exciting musical celebration with stand out performances by many of the biggest names on this area's music scene.Special mentions have to go to JR Bradfield for his solo entertainment to kick the night off, then his inspiring rendition of the Star Spangeled Banner played on a guitar he built himself from an old tree stump in his back yard. JR Bradfield's dedication and enthusiasm for our roots movement is inspiring in itself.John Powers, the young standout guitarst, vocalist and drummer was amazing and, I'm happy to say he will be my American Roots guest host partner again next week. John Powers is someone you need to make an effort to come out and see folks so you can at least say, "you knew him when" because I'm telling you, JP is going somewhere. Many thanks to him and his band the Arturos for their huge efforts in helping keep the roots alive.We also celebrated Tommy Fuller's 60th birthday at roots 9 with a cake and song and although he only came out that night to listen and enjoy the music he could not ignore the pleas from the crowd of fans for him to play so he took the stage like the professional entertainer that he is and put on the performance of his life. American Roots 7 was a rousing success thanks again to our good friends and guest hosts, Kate Weber and the Bassboards Blues Band - and all of the special musicians who showed up to celebrate music.Again we had to deal with a Main St. detour, but you all made it - thank you for your effort. Story has it, the night before, a transformer blew somewhere blacking out the Rail sending flames shooting from the manhole covers on Main Street out front. But, I'll say this, the music on Thursday night was hotter than any flames I've ever seen.A highlight of the night was when 15 year old Steve Shallis got on stage with his guitar and stood shoulder to shoulder with legendary guitarist Johnny Charles and Snakeman Runyan. He played his young ass off as his proud father watched from the audience. The kid has feel and he is in touch with his musical roots.This is what the American Roots movement is all about!Thanks to the players that night including Shallis, Charles and Runyan, Lori V, Gene Downin, Mike Caruso, Michael Krizan, Justin, Bernie Brauswetter, Jr Bradfield with another stand out perfromance, Walter Foot, Ed Pampani, Bill Bauer, Cheesecake Bill, Bones Sandford, Walter Foot, Mike Marrucci and again, if I have not mentioned you here, I am sorry. American Roots 6 was an evening that will not soon be forgotten.One where we said farewell to our roots brother Duane Chez, and a night of incredible, memorable performances by some of the most talented musicians and singers anywhere - and I mean anywhere!There were so many sign-ups that some didn't get to play. (I'm looking at the sign-up sheet from last night as I write this and I'm wondering who put all the x's and o's on here.) Any way - I'm very sorry that some of you didn't get a chance to play.I would like to suggest to those who didn't play send me an email at nastyned@att.net and I will personally write you in before I leave the house next Thursday. I think too, in general, emailing me ahead of time that you are coming would help because each week this party gets bigger and bigger and it's starting to get away from me. With that said, if there is anyone interested in becoming an American Roots volunteer that could help me a little with this, please email me as well. Many thanks.Two of my favorite, stand out moments last night belong to Tweed Schade and Cochise who tore the place up with their rootsy original "Ridin' that Raritan Line" (how fitting) and the Woody Guthrie classic "This land is my land" - wow! More hot-blues, raw-country, roots-rock-jammin' and sultry-balladeering down at the station made American Roots Open Mic the place to be if you were anywhere near the northern hemisphere last night.We had talented players, from as far away as New York City in one direction and Philadelphia in the other, making music for local music aficionados and one who arrived by train from Puerto Rico - not sure which route he took to get to Newark's Penn Station, but once there it's a short train ride down the Raritan Valley Line to our little station - as word of the American Roots celebration continues to spread. (Click into any of the links here marked "Friends" in the lower right column to see some of what I'm referring to.)Many thanks again to Duane Chez for his inspired playing, dedicated attitude and tireless efforts in helping keep the roots music flame flickering bright for the generations to come. Players ages 20 to 60 stood side by side and entertained a very receptive audience as the stage beneath their feet; if you closed your eyes, could have been from anywhere in New Orleans, Memphis, Nashville, Austin or Chicago.Memorable performances by Hunterdon County's favorite blues diva Lori V, Jersey guitar legends Johnny Charles and Bernie BB Bruaswetter, guit slingers Jim Mosca and Jeff Page and the spirited presence of Tommy Fuller, who sang and played like a man possessed, made for an awesome night of music and mayhem in Bound Brook, NJ.New comers Case Newcomb tore it up on his '59 Les Paul. Joe Cassady & the West End Sound laid it down like it was a family tradition. Kate Weber dished it out to the guests and an all-star supporting cast made sure it all went down so smooth.Great efforts by Todd Lanka, Tyler Penn, Steve Decker, JR Bradfield, Arnna Wendt, Mark Weber, youngsters from Dirty Brown Sound and Dexterity, and on and on - all are applauded.There were so many quality players getting on and off the stage, I'm sure I missed somebody here - forgive me if I have, but thank you for your support non the less.Kudos to Rail ownership, management and staff; Eddie Ray from Computown, Ed Pampani, Win, Jessica, Byron and the train conductors who step down, wave with a smile, and then have get back on the train knowing how much fun we're having at this station.Last night's lucky ticket holders won cool T shirts and hot live CD's from Gus Bardaji, a Nasty Ned Hohner harmonica and concert tickets to see Marshall Tucker Band and Ten Foot Tall on stage together at Starlands.The No Cover Charge at American Roots Open Mic means you can come down to the station even if you're light in the pocket - while stuffing the optional donation jug means you get opportunities to win groovey prizes later in the night.I've got to say, from the bottom of my heart, thank you all who continue to make this American Roots celebration bigger and better each week - and "something" very well worth my turning down a steady gig in Austin, Texas to stay and host.

Thanks to everyone who braved the road construction nightmare last night to make our 2nd American Roots Open Mic a rousing success.I love having these parties and not having to mess up my own living room, but like Nick says - this is my living room - and it's yours, too.Tremendous effort last night from the dedicated bluesman and live music supporter Duane Chez. He does a lot from behind the scenes for American Roots and on the stage as well as he played his ass off last night. He supplied all of the stage gear AND brought the coolest friends with him including, my brother from another mother, Mike Caruso from the Doughboys.Because of the repaving of Main Street we all had to park in a lot across the street from The Rail - you would think not too big of an inconvenience right? But the guys unloading the equipment truck had to carry each piece across a street being repaved! Dodging trucks and tractors and guys shoveling molten asphalt at their feet... You get the picture. It was an awesome effort.Thanks Duane Chez. You are the man - and you played like one last night.We kicked off with a solo from Paul Ransom, Virginia Beach - then Duane Chez and friends featuring Mike Caruso on bass, Jake jar el (Noo Dogs) on drums, Snakeman Runyan on harmonica and vocals and the one and only Johnny Charles, who absolutely blew everybody away with his awesome playing! My man was ON!There were great performances by Jim Popik and Jeff Page from Ten Foot Tall Band with Walter Foot (Bardaji Group) on drums and "Big Boy" Kenny Nerbek (Filthy Rich & the Poor Boys) on Bass with Kevin Tracy from Hilltop studios in Bangor, PA sitting in on keys.Ten Foot Tall Band is opening for Marshall Tucker at Starland Ballroom in a couple of weeks and have agreed to return next week with a pair of tickets (to that show) for us to give away to one of next week's lucky ticket holder. Remember there is NO Cover charge at American Roots, but we encourage donations of "any denomination" to help pay the guest host band for bringing their gear, sharing it with everyone and playing for free. So when you come down to the station, please drop a little something in the big white jar marked "Donations" at the door and Jessica will give you a ticket that can win you some cool stuff later.Last night we gave away a $30 food and drink certificate for The Rail and a bunch of cool T Shirts. Last week, two pair of Joe Satriani tickets, next week, Marshal Tucker with Ten Feet Tall tickets and other cool stuff.I'm going to have to fly, here. I have a million things to do yet before rockin' the Bull tonight with the Noo Dogs (and friends) in Piscataway. wwww.nastyned.com for details.Let me first mention the tremendous contributions by Michael Krizan, Bob Bernard and Snakeman Runyan and others who rocked with a sort of reunion of Hot Sauce, then Gus Bardaji with Todd Lanka on bass and Walter foot on drums, joined by Kevin Tracy on keys. Mark and Kate Weber for there great duet performance and Eric and one of his guys from Odus Driftwood who performed as a country duo (their entire band couldn't make it but promise to do so in the future. Then a big jam at the end with everybody from Duane Chez and friends including JR Bradfield and a little blowin' and shoutin' from me.Thanks again to Ed Pampani (our official Am Rts photog) and Eddie Ray from Computown for the cool pics.

Thanks to everyone for making our first American Roots open mic a success. Someone kidded, that I just wanted to throw a party and not have to mess up my own house."Well it did feel like my own party - and thank you all for coming. If you ask Nick, the manager, he'll tell you The Rail is my house, and he wants you to know it is your house, too. There was a very cool vibe in the room.With lots of passionate players and plenty of real music enthusiasts together in one place celebrating a music form that breathes life into our culture and the bedrock on which modern music stands - American roots open mic proved to be a great place for a music fan to come and get-up close to the music and for musicians, an intimate venue with a very enthusiastic audience.Bassboards Blues BandMany thanks go to last night's guest host band, Bassboards Blues Band, who proved not only to be dedicated and talented musicians with a fantastic young singer named Kate Weber, who goes convincingly from Billie Holiday to Janis Joplin to a piano accompanied 30's torch song - BBB showed themselves to be good people, both gracious and generous who stepped forward for the cause.There was a very entertaining performance by Tom Fuller and Kate Weber. The guitar mastery of regional W.C. Handy Award winner Johnny Charles who I joined on Albert Collins' "Black Cat Bone" and Sonny Boy Williamson's "Pontiac Blues". It was my pleasure to perform with Michael Krizan, Jersey's King of the Delta Blues gut-bucket-slide guitar and with Noo Dog Gene Downin on bass, Glen Kubrak on drums, Doctor Greg from Bassboards on keys, we knocked out a couple of Muddy Waters and Paul Butterfield songsBrad Crowell put in a solid performance with "Crossroards" and "One Way Out" as some nice things happened on stage with Ed Z and Bill and Glenn from White Trash Hurricanes and Jimmy from Bassboards blowing harp. Later, a solo performance from Tom Fuller became a duo as I joined him on a Jimmy Reed number and an acoustic guitar/harmonica rendition of Free's "All Right Now." Also a young singer/songwriter named Patrick ShaCola, who we all met for the first time last night, performed three introspective and melodic originals.There were a lot of players meeting other players - some for the first time, sharing ideas and some hooking up and playing together - very cool. This American Roots open mic is going to become a scene where you can come to find a new band mate or a new band to join, or where you might happen upon that special player who's the missing piece for a project you're doing. And it's going to become a scene where producers and A&R types hang to scope things out - especially with the caliber of players who are showing up and as the word spreads. Concert Ticket Give-AwaysI gave away two pair of concert tickets to see Joe Satrani at Starland Ballroom compliments of The Rail.How this will work each week is - there is, as you know, No Cover Charge at our open mic, but we encourage a donation of any amount you're comfortable with giving that will go to the guest host band who plays for free and then supplys their equipment for the others. When you make an optional donation you're given a raffle ticket that could win you a pair of concert tickets, or a dinner for two, or other cool gifts later in the night. There where plenty of photo ops for photographers, and thanks to Ed Pampani, our official American Roots photographer, and Eddie Ray from Computown who is building an American Roots gallery online - probably at www.nastyned.com - there are sure to be a lot of great shots chronicling our first night. I'll post them here when they become available. Next week's guest host band is Hunterdon County and Bethlehem-Allentown area blues veteran Duane Chez and friends. Duane will be bringing along some very notable players (some of my favorites) you'll not want to miss. (I'm not sure I can mention names, yet so I'll hold off.)Anyway, enough of my scrawling. In closing, some absolutely exciting things happened last night; one prior to the show and one just after you all left, I'll talk more about it in another post.Thanks again for your support and interest.
